We have 2 young children and are relocating to the South Bay area from Seattle. Can you recommend a safe, family-friendly area to raise our kids? My husband will be working out of El Segundo. Prefer to rent at first before buying. We are looking for a 3+ bed home under $3000k/month. We can go as far south as N. Orange Co... Thank you!!!

Torrance, San Pedro(best area along Western Ave I believe), Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and some other local cities are all good ones to start with. Outside of that you have Long Beach and Lakewood, which is an added drive, but not too bad. Cerritos, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, and Cypress are next after that and about as far as you'll want to go down the 405(or 105). Most of those areas have good to great schools and are mostly family friendly areas. Costs can vary greatly though.

Stick to Torrance and El Segundo. I grew up in the South Bay and those are the most family friendly I would say. Of course Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo Beach aren't bad either. But I wouldn't really think of them as family oriented as the first two. And I went to HS in Manhattan Beach.

Keep in mind it is not so much the drive distances that get you in LA it is the volume of traffic. So do your husband and your family a favor and stay as close to work as possible. Forget OC. It may work for a while. But over time the drive will take its toll on everyone. I have seen it first hand.

That is the number one secret to enjoying life in LA - stay off the freeways when at all possible - especially during rush hour! With that in mind El Segundo would be ideal. We have friends that have raised their children their and the husband 'walks' to work. He is a very smart man (PhD in engineering) and they can afford to live wherever they want.

My 2c after living and working in the South Bay for 40 years.

Derek
