Since the typical speed on LA freeways is about 25 miles an hour during most of the commuting times, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

I have always wondered this also. When there is no heavy traffic people seem to really fly. What is the speed limit when there's no traffic? Are there speed traps on the freeways? Also, I never noticed any speed limit signs. What is the speed limit?

Stay to the right and you'll be fairly safe. Keep yo slow, wide behind out of MY lane* and we'll get along just fine.
*the #1 lane, aka fast lane... if you don't know the lane numbering, please learn it.

When traffic is light do NOT drive the speed limit in the fast lane! Yes, you might get rear ended. The people who are driving faster are breaking the law, but it's not your job to prevent it. Just get out of the way, move right until you find a lane that is traveling at the speed you want.
It's a moot point when traffic is heavy because nobody can reach the speed limit.

I'm sure there has been occasions of drive-by shootings involving folks who drove too slow in the fast lane. Besides, under CVC 22400a, you can be ticketed for driving the speed limit in the fast lane if the flow of traffic is faster.
If you have to stay at 65 (most fwys here) or less, do it in the right lanes.

It must just be an LA thing, but I think that all these people that are driving like bats out of hell when there's no traffic, are taking out some of the frustrations from those other commutes with tons of traffic.
It's kind of checking to make sure "my car can still drive 80 MPH." I consider myself a pretty good driver, but there are those occasions where I have gone over the speed limit and on those occasions have gotten caught by the CHP.

My commute consists of walking 20 feet to the home office. I simply enjoy driving fast.

There's plenty of people like that. It is a certainty that they are driving way too fast, but there isn't anything you can do about it unless you're wearing a brown uniform and sitting in a CHP cruiser.
Just let them go by as quickly as possible so that when/if they cause an accident you won't be close enough to get hit by flying pieces of cars. The safest place for those speeders is a few miles ahead of you on the freeway.
One of our primary rules on the LA freeways is to not Moderator cut: annoy anybody. It doesn't take much to set off road rage, and in spite of it being a felony plenty of people carry loaded guns. Plenty more are drinking and doping, and that's an explosive combination with high speeds, road rage, guns, drinking and doping.
If you want to survive just get out of the way. Take solace in the likelihood that eventually they will either get a ticket or they'll get a trip to the mortuary.

Here in LA we get a lot of drivers from other states, some believe the rules from that state apply here.
It gets worse near San Diego, a lot of military from the bases a lot of young drivers from every state. Traffic will be sitting at 15mph and someone will always race by at 55 on the shoulders.
