hello,
You think people in Los Angeles are sophisticated? You've got to be kidding me. When I go out with the girlfriends, all they talk about is the next $2,000 pocketbook their aiming to buy. I went to the hairdresser the other day and said something about the "shooting in Virginia" and people were like, "What shootings?" I went out to some fancy-pants expensive hip restaurant the other night and mentioned to five people I was going to see the movie "Killer of Sheep," and nobody had a clue what I was talking about. If your idea of sophistication is knowing what hem length is in for the season or where to buy the best $17 Sour Apple Martini, you've really lost me. One of the reasons I'm trying to leave Los Angeles is because I'm sick to death of the vapid gibberish around here. Man, I can't even go to the grocery store without having to listen to one-half of some inane cell phone conversation.

San Antonio....
where to begin..
Well, I have lived here my entire life.
Overall, I enjoy it and do not necessarily want to leave.
I have amazing friends, all my family here, and am just familiar with the in's and out's of the city.
With that said, I will admit that a lot of people find SA boring. However, people will say 'why don't you go to the missions, or natural bridge caverns, or the riverwalk?'
Well, I am a local and know the history of the Missions and find it boring. Walking thru a binch of old, run down, abandoned churches is interesting to a point, but unless you truly know what went down, the satisfaction from visiting local history is wasted.
The Riverwalk is fun, but bottom line is that it is a river with sidewalks on the side with restaurants and clubs and shops. Fun, but for how long???
Natural Bridge Caverns...well, that is not even in San Antonio. It is in the city of Garden Ridge which is a stones throw outside of SA city limits. Regardless, it is a fun walk thru a cave but for how long can that entertain you? Are you supossed to go back there every weekend and check out the rocks again?
People want excitement.
People want dancing, drinking, mingling, talking, flirting, sex, etc...
In SA, you can find all those things but it's not what you expect.
The 'hip' areas and clubs are dominated by upperclass whites and hispanics that fall into the 21-28 range. Sure, they have the looks, money, and moves but what if you are an older couple-say 32-40 that want to get out with others in your age range?
Well, if you are not 28 and under then your choices are numerous sports bars, pool halls, and honkeytonks. At any of those places you can find on any given night interesting conversations from all sorts of races that are middle of the road, average income folks. Lots of plumbers, mechanics, painters, construction workers, day laborers, etc. Mix of all races. White, hispanic, some asian, and a few blacks. The basic idea at these establishments is to just a bunch of friends(usually all guys) getting drunk and playing pool while watching the Spurs basketball game. Fun, if you are into getting hammered and watching basketball, but if not, then too bad.
There are very few, if any, upper class dance halls and bars/lounges that cater to the upper class older folks.
San Antonio is a city dominated by Hispanics, many of them illegal here from Mexico. SA is a city that is filled with blue collar workers who live pay check to pay check and any money leftover goes strait to the bars.
There are pockets in and around SA that break from the norm, but for the most part, San Antonio gives the feel to outsiders more often than not, that this is Mexico rather than Texas.
Just a local persons perspective here.
And by the way, I happen to live in one of those 'pockets' that break from the normal feel here in SA and I am quite content.
But then again, I have been here my whole life. Maybe I just don't know any better....

Humidity
I've lived in several place around the nation. Places like Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston have terrible humidity. I used to work for a company in Torrance and we would get employees transferring or just temporarily from our branches in Dallas, Houston, and Fairfax, Va. They would be so happy to be in normal dry and cool weather by the Pacific.

Los Angeles has many diversified areas. North to South, L.A. city limits are about 50 miles apart. Apparently, you're in an area I'm not familiar with.

As someone who is VERY unhappy in San Antonio (originally from Chicago via Dallas) I have to agree with many of the points expressed by others.
I'm 21, in college (soon to be at UT Austin) and have been VERY unimpressed by San Antonio. The city does give off a very unsophisticated vibe and there's no place to go if you want to mingle, socialize, be around other college/educated/goodlooking people. May sound shallow, but these needs were fulfilled in Dallas.
And Artie, I'm pretty sure people ANYWHERE in the US (save maybe Nebraska and N/S Dakota are more sophisticated than your average San Antonian.

Move to the great state of Texas and you too will be warmly welcomed by friendly Texans like the following .....

2) Fiction: "the freeways are all two lanes" Fact: The only two lane freeways are 1604 and 151. I-35, I-37, 281, I-10 & 410 are all 4 plus lanes.
3) Fiction: "it's too damn crowded here" Fact: San Antonio population 1.14 million, LA 3.69 million
4) "hubby is bored out of his mind" - Geez go to Sea World, Six Flags, the Riverwalk, Natural Bridge Caverns, Canyon Lake, Mission Trails, Market Square, SA Zoo, McNay Art Museum etc...Austin is only 50 minutes away, the beach is only 2 hours away, and Houston in only 2 1/2 hours away.
It seems to me that TwinkleToes only drove on the San Antonio highways between 4:30 and 6:00 PM and only went to the movies at 7:30PM on a holiday weekend.
I'm sorry to come off as rude but I have lived in San Antonio all my life and I am offended by the fictional senarios posted here. When you say "the shopping is awesome" I wonder if you truly are from California where there are world famous places to shop. San Antonio does have some shopping but nothing out of the ordinary.
Last but not least I guess I will have one less California driver to "tailgate" which is BS!

Sorry I called you out TwinkleToes but facts are facts. I'm not gonna let you bash San Antonio when 99% of what you say is false especially when you talk about traffic, weather, and how crowded it is.
