We are in the top 10 in the nation. Isn't that plenty? Unlike many of those other places that need the ski scrapers to create a sky line, we have mountains and hills that look just fine. As far as earthquakes, newer buildings can withstand an earthquake of 8.4 on the Richter scale. This area is supposed to be limited to 8.0 on the scale, if everyone did there work correctly calculating what has taken place in the past and the give on the techtonic plates.

I thought I read somewhere that LA as a whole was 5th in the country overall when considering all of LA city proper and not just downtown? Remember there are tall buildings in downtown, century city, westwood, mid-wilshire/miracle mile, koreatown, a couple in sherman oaks, burbank, etc...lots of other areas that don't register in the common skyline shots of LA. That gorgeous pic on the previous page's post is an excellent example!

Also keep in mind that it wasn't really until the 60s that tall buildings were built b/c of some ordinance or something limiting buildings to 150 feet or something like that...

I don't even think the Ritz is even captured in this picture along with a couple of other previously built hi-rises in the south park area.

A nitpick...Burbank is an independent city, not part of the City of LA.
