DUCY?
It's the LA condition: Millions move here for the weather and things to do, then wind up working tons of hours to keep a roof over their head.

In your dreams?

Most people get to choose between (1) well paying job that isn't fun, or (2) fun job that doesn't pay well. That's how life is.

well actually, the other reason I am interested in LA is the music scene. For some reason I am attracted to all those industries in which you need to know people and that are a racket. I'd rather get a good IT job and do my music on the side and have time for my music than working in the gaming industry and struggle. Also my lifestyle requires a lot less money than what the average American needs, so when I am on this board I take things in perspective.

Like the old saying goes, "You've got to pay the dues if you want to play the blues."

Part of paying the dues is living in rat traps and getting paid $10/hour.

Don't take it personally. The problem is that it seems like a lot of the people moving to Los Angeles don't have a good education and are essentially taking a roll of the dice praying that they will make it somehow. This causes all sorts of problems for people who have struggled all their lives trying to make it in Los Angeles. The rental costs in this city are already ridiculous and the influx of low income workers only exacerbates the problem. We got tons of unemployed on the public dole and local and state government in huge budget deficits that threaten the solvency of the state.

I work in IT as well and I can tell you that having a advanced degree doesn't mean much here. I know a lot of smart people in the field that are currently unemployed and unable to even get low level help desk jobs because of the bad economy.

This might be an exaggeration, but you're probably better off living homeless than trying to make it on a $10/hr salary.

Yeah, I love my country.

This is only my perception, but there's really no point to living if the only thing you're allowed to do is work.

How wonderful....you advocate being homeless and living off the work of others instead.

Great

So you'd rather mooch off the rest of us?

How will you enjoy your life if you have no money? I understand you don't have many "luxuries" that you indulge in, but on a $10/hr salary, you won't have a penny to spend on things YOU want to do.

After taxes, you'll have about a 14,560 which would give you 1,213/month. Depending on how far your work is, gas will be about $200+/month. Let's say you get extremely lucky and find a place for $550, that gives you about $463 left for food, bills (electricity, water, trash, car insurance, phone, health insurance - if your work doesn't offer it) and fun stuff. This is all underestimated amount, so if this looks tough don't even think about it.

I live 12 miles from where I go to school, and it takes me about 40 mins MINIMUM to get there. People don't understand how bad traffic is until they see it for themselves.

Why don't you save up some money (I'd say at least $4,000) before you decide to move out here? Or start from the bottom in a different state that is more affordable?

I grew up in LA, went to college in Boulder, CO, and decided to stay here an extra year because of the economy. I am living in a 2 bedroom apt with three people and our rent is only $330/month. With our cable bills (we get it all, dvr and all those special channels like showtime, hbo, starz, encore), electricity, water, and trash, our total doesn't even add up to $500. This has helped a lot with savings. Gas is a big one, when LA's gas was 2.89, it was only 2.21 in colorado.
