I think failure is a subjective term in this sense. I think that he can be considered a failure considering his public affair and failed attempt to run LAUSD. On the other hand, he is certainly no worse than Hahn and things overall seem to have gotten better on his watch. 20 years from now, my guess is that most people will be ambivalent about his time in office, although I do appreciate his push for rail in the city.

Failure? I dunno.. I believe L.A. has been on a downward spiral for decades.. I do believe that he is a racist and would hate for him to become Governor of California.

I would expect nothing less from an egotistical former Westwood bonger.

I do not like the Mayor. But the office is doomed to failure because all the power in the city is held in the city council and the developers who own them. Try and cross the developers and you may die. Just look what happened to that councilwoman Ruth Galanter in 1987. She went against the developers and her throat was slashed in an attempt at murdering her.

Wasn't that an ex-boyfriend who tired to kill her?

As I remember they never caught who did it. I could be wrong.
She was an unusually vocal and active opponent of development in playa del rey. After they tried to kill her she shut up about development. I'm just putting 2 and 2 together.
Why do you think we haven't had an anti-development councilmember since then? They know what will happen if they give anything more than lipservice to being antidevelopment.
I worked with someone who is a close friend of hers, I told him what I thought and he didn't say a word. I took that as agreement.
This city's politics have been slimy and deadly for at least 100 years, it is just hidden well since we dont have any real journalists asking good questions.

He is only against Playa del Rey because the people moving into the development will likely have some educational background beyond middle school (unlike the rest of the city) and won't blindly re-elect him because he is hispanic and takes nice pictures.

Why do you state things are are blatantly incorrect & nothing more than a racist rant? Seems to me that you would be more interested in dealing with the fact that Newport Beach is now a Democrat-majority city than bad-mouthing Villaraigosa

My brother works for the city of L.A. he would agree with you 110%.
