Yeah. That felt huge!!! I've felt a few 2-4 magnitudes and this just was amazing. The whole house was shaking and it was really loud. Oddly, my internet went out right before and my dog ran to my mom.

A reporter on radio station KNX 1070 AM said that a seismologist said the quake was centered on the Newport Inglewood fault which had a 6.3 quake in 1933 and a smaller one in 1920.

The San Andreas fault does go into the Salton Sea area and Imperial valley; the Newport-Inglewood is hundreds of miles away.

Here we go, we have an Earthquake and everyone wants to say it's a sign of the big one. California has and will continue to have earthquakes, why is it so groundbreaking that we had one tonight? I forgot, since scientists made their bold prediction now every earthquake we will ever feel means the big one is coming.
I hope everyone is OK though in all sincerity.

In addition to the above, the huge majority of California earthquakes are not even felt (below magnitude 2.0) and quakes above 5.0 are quite rare considering how many under 2.0s there are (dozens each day).

Well, whether it's the big one or an earthquake like the northridge one, the study of how earthquakes are related and what warning signs there might be could benefit people in earthquake ares.
