Ferraro's on Palo Verde and Los Coyotes Diagonal in Long Beach is Calabrese-style home cooking by a native Italian. It's a town favorite(always packed) and is relatively affordable with large portions(Osso Bucco is wonderful, Pasta Fagioli is great, and the tomato salad is to die for). The owners brother has also been very successful running upscale Italian restaurants in Vegas, so it seems to be in their blood.
Marino's Family Restaurant in Bellflower has been in business at least since I was a baby. Very affordable Italian and generally good food. Owned and operated by a single family since inception. Their Minestrone is one of my favorites
Ferrari's A'Roma Ristorante in La Palma. More upscale menu and prices with a quaint bar. Owned and operated by the Ferrari family in the restaurants name. Good food, but upscale Italian really isn't my style.

There are so many Italian restaurants, I don't want to recommend one.
However, I can tell you one to avoid. It's in Chatsworth. It's owned by an Indian gentleman who decided to open an Italian restaurant since he thought there were too many Indian restaurants. He serves the weirdest Italian food I've ever tasted. It's like Italian food but it's flavored with Indian spices.

Michael's in Naples (Long Beach). Expensive but very good. Plus you can take a walk along the canals after dinner for the true Italian experience.

LOL - all 3 are amongst the most expensive restaurants in L.A.
For more down to earth places:
C&O in Venice
Frankie's on Melrose, I guess that would technically be Fairfax District since it's not within West Hollywood city limits
Maria's in West L.A., Brentwood and somewhere in the Valley - it's owner is related to the owners of Matteo's (upscale old mob/Rat Pack hangout) and Hoboken (next door to Matteo's), also in West L.A.
Nicky D's in Silver Lake
Palermo in Los Feliz (very old fashioned but good)

Olive Garden....just joking
Has anyone been to Vito's in Santa Monica on Ocean Park? Very old school italian, its looks like its from the Godfather. Waiters in tuxedo's, etc. I havent tried enough of the food to give a recommendation, but good ambiance. The servers are very attentive, never had a problem.
"Marias in West LA"...Maria's Italian Kitchen? I'll second it. I think they have a new location in downtown la, or they were going to. The brentwood one is pretty small, the west la one is in a good location on pico.

If you want some cheap, delicious, completely non-pretentious italian food try out Andre's at 3rd and Fairfax between K-Mart and Whole Foods. For more upscale, I've heard Il Grano in West LA and La Botte in Santa Monica are both great.
