Hi everyone, thanks for your responses! In terms of diversity, I feel odd putting a quota on it... but having grown up in Southern Orange County and gone to school in North Carolina, I feel as if black people just aren't as well represented in better parts of California. It was kind of strange growing up knowing the distinction between Chinese and Taiwanese and celebrating Persian new year but never having had a friendship with a single black person... now that I think about it.

Santa Monica might fit your bill well. It's safe, walkable, and there's a pretty good amount of diversity, mostly in the southern part.

Altadena has a fairly large black population, but while there are some nice areas and some cafes and some sense of community, it doesn't have that urban feel you're after. It is diverse, though.

Yeah, I'm actually thinking Long Beach is the perfect place for what this OP wants. Santa Monica might be ok too, just to have more options.

SM probably has most qualitites but it aint so or a real urban place but pretty near urban areas.
