Default Apartment search in Long Beach

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to begin my apartment search. I will be moving to LB in a little while and so far I've only looked in Craigslist. Any suggestions on websites/papers to conduct my search would be most appreciated!

Are you going to CSULB? LBCC? Need to use the rail? Want to be by the water? There are many options really, it depends on what you want.

websites:

Los Angeles Apartments, Orange County Apartments, and San Diego Apartments (search for Long Beach)
Gazettes Town-News > Classifieds > Rentals (http://www.gazettes.com/classifieds/rentals/ - broken link) (Grunion Gazette is a local paper)
PennySaverUSA.com Online Classifieds (search for Long Beach, localized classified mailer)
Real Estate Rental & Sale :: Classified Ads from Long Beach Press-Telegram :: Long Beach Press-Telegram Classifieds (Press Telegram is the major paper in LB)
The Sun based out of Seal Beach also features eastern and coastal Long Beach, but there is no website.

I'll be starting at CSULB this Fall and my partner might end up working in LA so we're hoping to remain car-less and near the rail line. We also have a dog so anything near a park would be nice. Belmont shores and parts of downtown LB have been suggested to me, but I'm open. We're looking to spend no more than $1300/month on rent, which hopefully is feasible for a 1 or 2br apartment. Any more suggestions or pointers are greatly appreciated!

hey,
I just wanted to open a new thread and since my question is pretty much like yours, I hope its ok if I add another question:

Same situation here, will start at CSULB in fall and looking for a good place to live. I'd love to live by the beach, looked into Downtown LB/Belmont Shore/Belmont Heights/Naples... I have lived in SoCal for over a year, but never been to the beach area in LB, so maybe someone can help me here. What do you guys think has the best value? I would spend a large amount of time on the beach, so I would love to live close to Belmont Shore but rooms are at least 700$ and I would love to go a little cheaper.
Any suggestions in general on areas to live in LB?

thank you

There are a fair number of CSULB students near 4th street (Retro Row). It's a bit cheaper than the shore but not much. downtown is an option but you'll want to be south of 5th most likely. The beach is not nice by downtown though. If you want a better beach you need to be closer to alamitos bay in belmont shore. You can even do a short bike ride to seal from belmont shore. though that being said, downtown isn't all that far of a bike ride to the shore either so if you dont need to be walking distance it may work.

ultimately for you I recommend belmont shore or the 4th street area.

brutzel1: you can probably find a room in the community around CSULB for under 700. Plenty of people rent rooms out of their suburban homes in the surrounding neighborhood for that purpose.

morphomercedes: a lot of college students live on the eastern(NE,SE, and E) side of the traffic circle(where PCH, Lakewood Blvd, and Los Coyotes Diagonal meet). the rail isnt close to CSULB, so its either going to be a bus from the csulb area for your partner or a bus for you. with class schedules being unpredictable, its probably better for you to live close enough to the school to walk or bike. I dont know how your price range will work in Belmont Shore, but it may take a little looking. You may do better around Recreation Park and Belmont Heights though. If you want to live close to the rail, Signal Hill, Downtown, and Wrigley are the neighborhoods you'd want to check out.

Thank you all for the responses!

I'd like to ask a follow up question re: public transport in Long Beach. I imagine I'll be attending 1 or 2 night classes/wk and I was wondering how safe/easy it is to ride the bus at say, 9pm or so. I'd like to find a place to live in Belmont Shore/Heights and I've looked at bus routes, but I'm just wondering what the general perception is in terms of safety.

Once again, many thanks!

riding from the shore to csulb is very safe. There isn't an unsafe neighborhood at all in that route. plus, csulb students ride the bus free in LB.
