In the past few years, it has become more common to use the term "Eastside" to also include the neighborhoods of Silver Lake, Echo Park and Los Feliz instead of its historical usage as neighborhoods east of the LA River.

I'm definitely against using the term Eastside for any neighborhood west of the river and west of downtown. If Silver Lake is East, what is Central? The Wiltern?

Anyway, there needs to be a good replacement name for the combined Silver Lake, Echo Park and Los Feliz neighborhoods. I've heard "greater Silver Lake" and very rarely "Edendale".

What say you?

Edendale was an old name for a neighborhood that didn't cover the totality of the region.

This blogger
http://franklinavenue.blogspot.com/2...geles-map.html says figuring out eastside and westside is controversial, and invites the readers to critique the LA Times' new project to map the neighborhoods of LA here
http://projects.latimes.com/mapping-la/neighborhoods
the LA times compiled the map using reader input, and it is subtly different from this map
http://mappery.com/fullsize-name/Los...ighborhood-map

Since Silver Lake has over 40,000 people, I wouldn't say it needed to be lumped together with other neighborhoods, and if it was, it would be simple enough to call it Silver Lake/Echo Park. I see evidence that Los Feliz is often considered together with Griffith Park.

There is a pretty reasoned discussion of neighborhood boundaries here:

edendale comes from the post office at the juncture of alvarado and glendale blvd i think.

but i agree, EAST SIDE is not SL, Echo or LF.

the east side is east of the river. to try and completely negate a history and culture is obnoxious and a bit condescending.

dammm transplant hipsters!!!

as for what the area should be called.

whats wrong with silver lake. or echo park. or any respective title.

as for the region at large... East of Hollywood (since they love "east"). what about West of Downtown. no they probably dont want to associate with any thing WEST.

i dont think the area needs a name like the east side or the west side or the valley. if any thing i think its a bit more Hollywood than anything. hollywood adjacent?

to add to the OP and The One, even downtown is east of the area in question and i've never heard someone who lives downtown say they live in the on the eastside. all in all, i think the term "eastside" (as it refers to silver lake and environs) is simply a term to spite those who live on the westside who aren't "cool enough" for said "eastside". seems pretty lame to me.

I think I've always heard it as "eastside" because other people thought it "east of Hollywood?"

Though East L.A. is and means totally something totally different to me.

For a while I was calling it "north of L.A." which is more location-ally acceptable I guess.

Eh, whenever I tell people who aren't familiar with the area (mostly in the OC) I say I live by Dodger Stadium... or the L.A. Zoo?

Their reply is always: "All the way up there?"

Whatever, I certainly would not want to refer to it as "the eastside" I know things change, but like you, to me the eastside or East L.A. is on the other side of the river. The greater Silver Lake area sounds pretty good. Or just don't change it period: Echo Park can be just that and Los Feliz district can be lumped together with Silver Lake maybe.

i agree, these areas stand alone. have their own fame. they can just be SL and EP.

even the "west side" is being abandoned for more specific designations like, culver city, palms, and a bunch of other names recently chronicled in the LA times mapping project.
