what is the fairfax district like?
I am thinking of moving to Los Angeles. I am a 23 year old guy, single, like to do 23 year old single guy things. I have never been to Los Angeles but my dad said he went once and liked a place called the fairfax district. What is that like?? Is it a cool place to live? I have a friend who lives in Silverlake, and another friend who moved out to Venice Beach. I am from Miami, thinking about making a move out to LA. Just wondering about this area called Fairfax district, or perhaps I'd consider somewhere like Echo Park because I hear there are a lot of hispanic people and I am hispanic myself and feel most comfortable around them. Well, help me out guys!

Fairfax would be 1/2 way between your two friends. It's a pretty area. You would feel at home ANYWHERE in Los Angeles, if you are comfortable around plenty of hispanic folks. You should really come out and check the city out, and see where you can find work.

there are hispanic people everywhere in LA, they make up about 50% of the population, so that won't be an issue for you. as for the fairfax district, it is right in the middle of the city. there is tons of stuff to do in that area as far as nightlife, dining, shopping, museums, etc... The only problem is that it gets very congested, especially between 3rd st and wilshire near the farmers market. if you don't mind walking a bit or riding a bike you should be fine.

Previous comments from BRinSM is righ on. In addition to that expect long distances and lots of traffic almost everywhere you go. If I was you I may look for a place to live close to where I'll be working or going to schools to. Silver Lake in close to Downtown L.A. Echopark is next to Silver lake, both places have a large community of Latin American and Mexicans. Venice Beach is on the West Side of Town (beach area) please don't expect warm beaches like in Miami, you will be disappointed. Since you're comming from Miami you must be familiar with cubans, there is a large pupulation of Cubans in Downey and Glendale, both nice places to live. It's funny but I've always wanted to move to Miami, it just that my family is here. Miami has a great night life and the beaches are amazing. I vacation there almost every year. Good luck to you and if you need further help with L.A area let me know and I'll be more than happy to help you.

The Fairfax area is nice, with older apartments and houses- to me it looks more distinguished. You also have Museum Row in Miracle Mile, which is very close and LACMA is definetely worth a visit. As mentioned above, the area is really congested especially around The Grove/ Farmer's Market. Canter's is another place in the district worthy of mention as a lot of bands used to play there before they really took off (ie Guns-N-Roses). Really, my only problem with the area is that they built the Grove (which I find to be too congested and obnoxious).

I lived there in the early 90's and had my office there until just a year ago. It is IMO one of the best places to live in this city. Lots to do, lots of singles and families. Good people, low crime. Easy to get around if you have a bicycle. Central location.
Only 1 real downside: It is not cheap.

the Fairfax District is a nice place to live. The only draw back I can think of might be the traffic during Yom Kippur. You cannot get anywhere and you must plan accordingly.

how expensive are we talking? I currently live in a rather upscale part of Miami, but my roommate and I found a good deal for a two bedroom apartment that costs only 1000 a month, so I'm only paying 500.

A 2bd place will typically cost $1800 and up. Expect to pay at least $2000
If you have patience and a little luck you might get something cheaper.
