LA is the coolest city on Earth.
Anything you want is here or within 2 hours.
I am from here, born and raised. I went to college in New Hampshire and Maryland.
I enjoyed myself and explored the areas.

As an adult I have lived in LA, Burbank, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Santa Fe, and Atlanta. I had wonderful times, and met super people in all places and now we are back here after 11 years in Atlanta.

You will come here. You will meet people who have similar interests. You will explore the foods, art, cultures, monuments, and surrounding attiributes (mountains, beaches, snow, wild flowers, deserts, etc) . It is an amazing, diverse place. Nothing like it.

I moved from the Midwest a few years ago and I'm very happy with my decision. I initially moved to Los Angeles to work in the entertainment industry. After a few years I was completely burned out by the hours and stressed and I'm working in finance now. I don't regret the decision at all. I'm single so I have enough money to support myself and live in a safe area. I've also made some amazing friends. Los Angeles is not for everyone and I recommend you make a lot of trips to the city before you even think of moving out here because it is not at all like it seems on television and in the movies.

My consideration is, within a couple of years, to find a job OR begin a graduate school program in the L.A. area or up in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly has a great urban planning program.) Of course, I'd like to save up about $10,000 first to be on the safe side, which I'm working on slowly.

Some of the areas I'm most interested in visiting are Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Silverlake. Basically, in addition to hitting up a few tourist traps (not the Hollywood crap, though,) I'd love to get at least a few hours of each of these communities and get a small taste of their local arts, cultural and ethnic influences, as well as their general attitudes and atmospheres.

Three days won't cut it, so I can see myself making a few more trips back to L.A. to get to know it better; I'm also considering Houston and I'm sure I'll pay that city several visits.

Don't totally discount Hollywood; there's a lot more to the neighborhood than the superficial tourist veneer. It's not for everyone (it's dirty and gritty in parts, and loud at night) but it's a fascinating, vibrant, exciting city neighborhood that is surprisingly (well, it surprised me, anyway) livable.

Hollywood has some fun eateries & book stores. I had a bf who had a studio apt in the slightly seedier end of town & it was pretty cute. He controlled the roaches with boric acid powder. It worked.

Craigslist message board perusing may help you in your decision process.
