Last time I checked...Los Angeles is in California, and California is a part of The United States

Just because L.A has alot of Mexicans and Mexican Culture doesn't make it a part of Mexico.

The slant of the article is not how Los Angeles is becoming part of Mexico or whatever. It's about the middle class disappearing. The statistic that struck me the most is that only 2% of homes sold in the last quarter of '06 were affordable to families earning the median annual income of about $56,000. But that's certainly not a shock to those of us who live here, right? *sigh*

Yeah its definitely becoming a two class society. The rich can live well no matter what. The poor will cram 3 families into a single family home to make the payment. The middle class who just wants what they're parents had (modest house and a couple of kids) are leaving.

I read the article. The author states that while it is good that LA's problems are finally being talked about seriously, there is an urgent need for action, and that if nothing is done than LA could wind up being MORE economically unequal than Mexico. It also states that the completely dysfunctional LAUSD is as close to a root cause of LA's other problems as any one factor can be. Pretty much what I've been saying on the boards all along.

BTW, the article was not about immigration but economic inequality.

Are they just saying LA County or are they talking about all of Southern California?

Default LA vs SA

I live in San Antonio now and used to live in LA. I do live in a city where so called non hispanics ARE the minority. The problem really is that our government is perpetuating the problem. Non hispanics think that the government is pandering to these people when the truth is that by allowing them to remain non english speaking, we have people to clean the rooms of our hotels,we have people to pick fruit, we have people to mow your grass and the best part is that it keeps the wages from ever and I mean ever going up to a livable wage for the middle class. We are a tourist city and we don't have any high paying tech jobs to speak of so we need people to work at the many hotels we have. The pledge of alligiance is spoken in spanish on Friday's and if you want to get your kids in pre-school they get tested to see how much spanish they speak or you either have to wait or find a private school. I have mostley hispanic friends who are just as upset with the situation as any American. This isn't about racisim it's about survival. I don't care who comes here. If you want to join the party ok. Please remember that as long as our government keeps these immigrants ignorant , they make money. You should want to work and speak the language and be a part of this society, try it and stop whinning

Like Majoun said, the article is NOT about immigration. It stated that if LA officials don't act promptly to offset the income disparity this city will soon end with one equal to that of Mexico.

I'm just as upset as you guys are, but the topic isn't immigration- it's income disparity.

Hooray! That means White males, like me, will qualify for affirmative action!
