Default Please help with Section 8 questions Mother 84 & legally blind

I hope I can find some answers here.

My mom is 84 yo, legally blind and only has her social security income of $821 per month. We have been supporting her for 15 years but now my 64 yo husband needs to retire due to health problems. We purchased the house mom has been living in 15 years ago to house mom and my aunt who had respiratory failure due to childhood polio and metastatic breast cancer. My aunt passed away 10 years ago and now we can no longer pay the mortgage, property taxes and home insurance, etc..

After waiting 2 years mom received notice that her name came up on the waiting list. We filled out the new paperwork which I now understand was for eligibility. A man we spoke to at the PHA says the credit check can take 6 - 12 months?

I saw somewhere that in LA County you can be on the waiting list 8- 10 years! Can anyone give me some idea how this works and how long it will be before she will receive a voucher?

TIA,
mitzi
