Quiet areas near or around UCLA, need zip codes (Los Angeles: apartments, rentals)

Hi All,

I may be starting a new job near UCLA/Westwood area. What are some of areas that are not considered areas for students. I am 45, single will work 40 hours and a part-time job at home.

I will be selling my house and renting for a few years. Rent can be up to $1,500 for a 1 bedroom or a small house.

Ideally, I want a commute of less than 30 minutes by freeway or street. This would be actually driving and not sitting in traffic on the freeway watching my fellow commuters shave and read the newspaper.

there are some large complexes in culver city around jefferson blvd and the fox hills mall that should meet your requirments. i'm nearly certain you won't find a house in your prices range (maybe a guest house), but there will be plenty of apartments for you to consider. you'll also be no more than 30 minutes from the ucla campus. if you look to close to the campus then you'll have to deal with students, which will make having a quite home nearly impossible.

There are some areas off Sepulveda around Brentwood Glen (90049) or the Getty that are nice and quiet and very close to UCLA. You may not find much in your price range, but you might luck into a small apartment or a unit in an older triplex. Many owners don't want to deal with students and would be willing to give a quiet, older tenant a break. Agree with BRinSM-- in your price range, finding even a tiny house will be unlikely. A triplex would be the next best thing.

In the eastern end of West Hollywood, prices for 1 bedroom apartments are coming down - it shouldn't be difficult to find places for $1200-$1500. It takes us about 20 minutes to get to UCLA taking Sunset (and it's a pretty drive), but I haven't driven it during rush hour; taking Santa Monica Blvd will take longer because there are more stoplights. Zip codes are 90046 and 90069 (90069 will be more expensive and 90046 also covers parts of LA/Hollywood).

I agree with the above two posters - you won't find a house, even a small one, for only $1500.

When I was searching for apartments I found this website to be helpful. It costs $60 for membership, and you get I believe 60 days to search.

Los Angeles Apartments, Orange County Apartments, and San Diego Apartments

it has a lot of places to look into in Southern California, and you can search by zip code.

If you use the site, I would recommend checking off West LA, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, Brentwood just to name a few.

Actually, I take this back. Our neighbors recently moved out of our building into a small, two bedroom house in Silver Lake; they pay $1500 a month. But the place was hard to find - the only reason they got it was they knew someone who lived on the street/knew the landlord. However, Silver Lake is more than thirty minutes from UCLA and I don't know if you'd be able to find rents like that closer; you'd have to know someone to get a good deal like that.
