Default Wow, Montana Ave. is a Ghost Town!

I can't believe how many shops and restaurants have closed in the past six months! It seems every other store is empty and "going out of business" signs are everywhere.

Yet, Westside real estate continues to perk right along, with backup offers galore on homes priced north of $650K.

Montana ave is very overpriced real estate. When the rents come down to reality the stores will return.

I was on Ventura yesterday, and I noticed it. But on Montana, you'll pass four stores in a row closed down. It's unreal! I lived right off Montana during the last "big downturn" and it was nothing like this.

I agree with this. The whole market needs to correct itself, it takes time.

I havent been to montana ave in years....use to go trick or treating north of there....is that still the hot spot in santa monica?

Went to the promenade and pier today....promenade seemed lighter than usual around 6-8. I dont know how half the merchants there make, esp the kiosk sellers. Maybe its all summer business.

Montana is ridiculously overpriced. It always has been. But so is Melrose, Abbot Kinney, the Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive. Main Street is right up there, too. I just wonder why Montana has been hit so much harder. The real estate market in Santa Monica certainly isn't suffering.

The thing I liked about Montana was that it had unique stores. There were hardly any chains, just unique boutiques, quaint shops and cute cafes. It was fun to stroll and windowshop and grab a coffee and sit outside. It's not so much fun to windowshop at Pottery Barn and the Gap or grab a coffee at McDonald's. I hope Montana doesn't become that (like Colorada Ave. has), but I wonder if that's inevitable.

Montana was hit harder for several reasons. Business taxes in Santa Monica are higher than surrounding cities and Regulations are worse. Also, the area doesn't get the same traffic volume as Melrose, Rodeo, or Abbot Kinney.

Haven't been to Montana Ave. in a while, but I can only imagine that in this economy that even the relatively well off won't tolerate the prices their. Even the storefronts along Westwood Blvd. and Gayley Ave. seem more vacant than usual. That Palazzo they put in Westwood Village also hasn't lived up to it's hype, plus it looks like crap.
