I am from east coast, looking at job at LA Children's Hospital. What is its reputation there? What kind of area is it in? How close to Hospital could I live in safe, nice area. Could pay rent ~$4000 or buy ~$600,000. Advice, insights appreciated.

Middle-aged couple, no kids. Mostly day work, but also on call with a need to get back to hospital ASAP when called in middle of night/weekends.

I answered you on the other thread - will post here again to make sure you see -

Since you don't need schools, definitely look at a beautiful area north of the hospital called Los Feliz. It extends northward from there, right up to Griffith Park. You will be safe, in beautiful surroundings, close to work (maybe even close enough to walk), with lots of cultural events and things to do. Enjoy!

I agree with the Los Feliz suggestion; it's a nice neighborhood, safe, very walkable, lots of nice restaurants and shops, and extremely convenient for the hospital - you could walk to work if you wanted. The hospital itself is in a sub-section of the area that's a mini-medical complex of sorts; there are a couple of hospitals right there. Silver Lake would also another nearby nice neighborhood.

My wife is an attending there and loves it; from my understanding it is one of the best teaching hospitals in the U.S.. From what I've read it is the best in CA, even better than UCLA Mattel; then again, I am sure it varies depending on the speciality etc. They are building the new hospital and it looks like it was supposed to be done in 2009, but it looks like they may have run out of funding as I have noticed that construction has stopped/slowed down.

One thing you should realized is given the demographics of the immediate area that you will be exposed to a heavy spanish speaking population. If you work in the ED dept, you will see that the majority of patients are hispanic/mexican who are either illegal or extremely poor who use the emergency room as a free-clinic. It is sad, but they will often come in the middle of the night, and wait several hours to be seen by a doctor for 2 minutes, and be told that it is a common cold.

As for your living situation, it will be tough to find a single-family home at your price range in the Los Feliz area. You may want to consider Atwater, Glendale, or Burbank. Or you can most likely rent a decent home at that price range in the immediate area. Good luck.
