Commerce isn't THAT horrible but its not where most people would choose to live. I'm curious why you want to live there. Its close in distance to downtown, but rush hour traffic is nasty and I'm willing to bet that from your desk to your front door in Commerce during rush hour is a 30 minute trip. Just IMO, I'd rather live in Montebello, or even moreso, Monterey Park or Alhambra, which are just about as far from downtown. Actually parts of both towns around Fremont St are pretty darn close to downtown and immune from most traffic.

There are lots of options in and around LA, but without knowing budget and requirements, its impossible to make a recommendation.

commerce is not that bad.

the problem it has is that it is mostly commercial/industrial. its a bigger city than most others in the area, but is less densely populated.

they have a really good swim program. lots of olympic swimmers and polo players (brenda something is a recent olympian who was practically raised at the commerce aquatic center. she competed for UCLA and went on to play on the natl team).

the city has its ammenities and the housing stock is mid century to newer. nothing too fancy. its a quite area. gang activity is MINIMAL.

what might be a concern from most. expecially those who dissuade you from living in cmmrce (with out any SUBSTANCE to back it up) is probably because of its proximity to East Los. it borders east los angeles. and bell gardens. and montbello. E Los has its own rep. Mntbllo is nice, but BG is somewhat dirty.

commerce is fine. but what type of place are you looking for specifically? a vibrant walkable neighborhood? a quiet suburban town?

Thanks for the advice everyone. Im from Chicago so am use to urban living. I have lived in latino neighborhoods before and actually like them as long as there is not too much gang activity. The main reason I am into commerce is housing seems to be affordable and is not too far from downtown. I will be making between 70,000-80,000 a year.

commerce is more suburban with a bit of urban-ness along the major drag (atlantic). its a pretty boring place really. there is the citadel mall of course...

Considering your income, the declining real estate market, and that you are just moving to LA you really need to rent, not buy.

I don't know many people with your level income that would consider buying a house in Commerce. Also consider that its likely going to be years before housing in LA sees any considerable appreciation.

Scott: I make about what you make and I can afford a house. And there are some great deals downtown- my friend lives in the Bartlett @ 7th and Spring and units there start from $140k on up. WAs just there Sunday, buying a suit in the Fashion District, then off to 524 S Main (Nickel Diner) for lunch. Very urban, still edgy, but with a neighborhood feel to it.

I recommend taking a walk down there sometime.
