I live in the 90016. In terms of safety, you should treat the residential neighborhoods and the main streets differently. The neighborhoods are reasonably safe, about average for the city. I've lived here for years mostly problem free. There is some tagging in the residential neighborhoods, and the burglary and theft from vehicle is about average for the city: on par with East Hollywood, for example.

There are a couple of industrial streets that are clearly worse: Jefferson Blvd, parts of Adams. These streets have a lot of empty businesses, and thus drugs and prostitution can sometimes be found in places that aren't otherwise used.

So the neighborhoods are okay, and the main streets needs work. There are several committed community organizations, and I think, on the whole, the future looks bright for the 90016.

You definitely hit the nail on its head. Lived in the area for a while, while the residential streets in my immediate area were nice- my immediate cross-street Adams was filled with mostly warehouses, walking alone at night time on Adams definitely not recommended. Most graffiti I noticed in my area was 18th Street, and occasionally ran accross ladies of the evening doing their work. My experience in my neighborhood was pleasant for the most part.

Thanks for the info. I'm considering moving to 90016. Does anyone know anything about the neighborhood pocket between Washington Blvd and the 10 fwy, and Burnside and Redondo? Specifically the streets Cochran, Cloverdale, and Dunsmuir?

------------------Description of Suspects in the recent burglaries----------------

I live in the 90016 area near Sycamore and Bangor. On 12/04/09 1:23pm I was driving home. I entered into apple street from Redondo Blvd toward sycamore and I seen 2 afr/amer males in a 1999/2002 4 door white LexusGS300/400 parked on Apple St. The two men were betwn 18-26yrs of age. one of the men got out of the car and went directly to the corner house on Alsace Ave and the other took off driving. I parked on Apple St. and observed the one knocking on my neighbors door. When he seen me checking him out he immediately walked away and ran. I seen him calling on his cell phone to the other suspect when there after the Lexus drives up and picks him up. I tried to catch up to get there Lic# plate but they sped off very fast.
