Running/hiking near Westwood
My fiancee and I are moving from the Bay Area to attend grad programs at UCLA. We are both physically active and have been spoiled by the incredible/accessible hiking trails in the Bay Area. We love running on trails, not only for the great excercise, but also to get away from the hecticness of the city (not to mention easier on the knee's and generally cleaner air when surrounded by trees). Was hoping there are trails close by to Westwood. Are there places people recommend for good/challenging/secenic running and hiking close to campus (brentwood, etc.)?

Check out Franklin Canyon up in Beverly Hills or the massive Topanga State Park northwest of Brentwood. Tons of hiking around here so I don't think you'll probably feel you're giving up too much in that department coming from the Bay Area.

there are a few trails in the brentwood and pacific palisades area that go up through the santa monica mountains. in addition, there are more trails up in the hills above malibu as well as trails in griffith park.

The trails up in the canyons are not going to be to friendly on the knees, but there are several fire roads you can run on if you prefer.
The Campus has a trail that wraps around sunset and veteran, but you have a lot of traffic.
I'd suggest running on the sand in santa monica, pac pal or Malibu. It could be a short drive and you are well away from traffic, noise and will have the varying dry and wet sand to choose from.

There are many opportunities and trailheads in the Santa Monica Mountains. Some gems like this one: King Gillette Ranch: An Easy Hike with Great Views - LAist: Los Angeles News, Food, Arts & Events, plus if you ever get the chance to get out of the area, I've only hear good things about the Trans-Catalina Trail.
