Default What is the deal with the weather.

I don't ever remember May and June both being so cool at night. Matter of fact it is July now and the air blowing into my house is downright cool. I really can't remember a May/June/July this cool at night. Even the days haven't been that warm maybe mid 70's, I do live in LB near the beach but still.

As Jerry Seinfield woud say "What is the deal".

Seems normal to me. I remember plenty of times watching 4th of July fireworks and needing a light sweatshirt. And I remember plenty of years when 4th of July was hotter than hell. Its weather. It's a little different every year.

seems pretty normal. generally a 20 degree swing from day to night, and we're right at our seasonal average around 77-80 degrees which puts us at 60 at night

I'd say if anything seems unusual it is that the marine layer is still so pervasive in July.

the may gray/june gloom pattern seems to be stronger than normal this year. if i remember correctly, it was almost non-existant last year. i really prefer the sun and hope that it starts to make itself known on the coast sometime soon. i hate coming home from work and hitting a wall of clouds as i get within a half mile of the coast.

As Jerry Seinfield woud say "What is the deal".
Here's the deal.

Firstly, the Sun is sleeping, no or few spots, very low overall EM flux.

Secondly, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation went negative phase recently.

Thirdly, there have been a number of volcanic explosions in Alaska and the Kurils.

Add these all up, and it means that the Polar Vortex / jet stream are stuck in a late winter / spring mode.

This means, the normal set up, whereby the Pacific High sets in and caps us off with ongoing high pressure / steady 1500 foot marine layer at coast / inland heat, has never stabilized. It's now so late in the year, it may never stabilize.

Expect "troughy" weather, upper level lows, maybe even a strange mid summer cold front from the Gulf of Alaska. Interesting that many have not noticed that the marine layer keeps getting mixed out and when it's in, is thick. That is known as the "squeegie effect" - ahead of a cold font / trough the marine layer gets bulldozed and pushed ahead of "the blade." So, although some at the coast say "it's normal" in posts up above, it is definitely not normal. Normally, we only see this effect in late fall and early spring. Normally in summer the marine layer is steady 1500 feet and limited to the coast / near coast and rarely gets squeegied or mixed out.

2009, Year Without Summer?
