Well, I'm really trying to stay general for now. Obviously there are areas that are more "fun" and "hipster" than others, so I understand this. Nope, I have no job offers, as I said, and don't expect to be making much over $30k/yr to begin. Housingwise I need no luxuries but am just looking for areas to look into.

Listen, folks, don't anybody jump on me...but if you're looking to move without really having a job and without really having a place to stay, I personally would wait before moving to this area of the country.

I'm not trying to be a nay-sayer; but let's be practical. Right at this moment, CA has the fourth highest unemployment rate in the nation. And as far as the L.A. area? Competitive much? I mean you have no idea. Seriously. Everyone thinks he or she will "try harder" or has "more skills" or has a degree (which makes sense because, well, most people do...including many unemployed, BTW). Everyone thinks, "That won't happen to me moving out there because I have X-Y-Z in my favor." Yet there is still a great amount wandering around jobless and homeless. Think about it.

Wait. Wait until the economy gets a little better before "taking a chance" that could ruin you financially for many years. Yes, when you're young is the time to take chances...technically. But this kind of a chance? We're above 10% employment as it is. The economy is for shoot. Supposedly we're just now beginning to crawl out of that hole as a nation. As a state? Oh. My God. Money problems. Such serious ones that legalizing pot is once more on the potential (pot-ential! Get it? Yar har) agenda, for the money taxes on it would bring in. Legalizing pot to pay for things like schools...whew. Yeah, yeah, I know. Another big draw for the young. (And I am not personally dissing pot although I don't smoke it.)

But seriously. If all you have is a dollar and a dream, now is not the time to consider SoCal.

For a person who has received a firm job offer, I would give different advice.

I can't see why anyone would jump on you, JerZ, for telling the truth! I've been saying the same thing for months now. Unless a person already has a job, or at least enough money for six months to a year's worth of living expenses, they shouldn't move here. A hope and a prayer aren't enough anymore. California's situation in general is going to get worse before it gets better.
