I live in Carson. It's relatively safe, but the "relative" depends on what you compare it to. It's safer than Compton and Inglewood, but not as safe as Torrance and El Segundo. The north side of Carson is generally more affluent and more black (Carson is one of only a handful of cities where blacks are more affluent than whites), but it's also closer to Compton and has some gang problems. The neighborhood just north of the college is Stevenson Village and can be bad. Just south is, I can't remember the name, and Del Amo. Both are decent, but expensive and they are single family with not much to rent. Central and south Carson have some gang problems too, but the gangs are mostly quite for the last few years. It's getting better everywhere.

It's hard to recommend what you might like not knowing your interests or budget, but really anywhere except most of Compton, North and East (Central) Long Beach, half of Gardena, much of Hawthorne, and a few other places will meet your criteria of "safe".
