I'm moving to the LA area in the next couple of months. I'll be looking for a one bedroom apartment in the $1000 range. I'm wondering where to start looking? I've thought of North Hollywood, West Hollywood, Studio City and Burbank. Any suggestions?

North Hollywood is your best choice.

Default North Hollywood

I've read some entries that there are good and bad areas in NoHo. Any advice as to certain areas? I'm looking at an apartment on Saticoy. A friend also told me to stay south of the Ventura Fwy if looking there. True?

Stay South of Oxnard and you will be fine (as far as North Hollywood goes). Other cities in the valley have different boundaries...

Living South of Ventura Blvd can be quite pricey and $1000 might not be realistic. I lived just north of Ventura Blvd in Studio City for 2 years for $1050, so it might not be too far off. This was a few years ago, and with rentals being the way they are now, you may have more selection to choose from in today's market.

In terms of North Hollywood, there are many different North Hollywoods. There is Valley Village (where I live currently) which is western North Hollywood. There's Toluca Lake which is South East North Hollywood. There's NoHo Arts District which is Central NoHo and then there's Northern North Hollywood, north of Victory. West, South East and Central NoHo are definitely the nicer parts. I lived in a decent 2 bedroom Toluca Lake apartment for $1550, so that might give you an idea on price.

Saticoy is quite far north and heading into Sun Valley territory.

Wow! Thanks for all the info. One more question. I'd like to be within walking distance of some restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. Is that possible in any of those areas and with a $1000 budget?

The Lankershim/Magnolia area has those. Stay away from the new housing around the metro link station, like NoHo14 or NoHo Commons. They are horribly expensive. Look around in the area bordered by Lankershim, Magnolia, Cahuenga, Camarillo. It's a mixed single family and multi family area. You could also look between Lankershim and Tujunga.

Magnolia between Vineland and Cahuenga looks crappy, but past that it is nicer. There are some new apartment buildings on Magnolia, just past Cahuenga towards Burbank. I don't know the pricing, but might be worth checking out. There are a few apartment buildings on Clark Ave, one block south of Magnolia too.

I'm looking for places within walking distance of the NoHo Arts District. Can someone tell me about where that is located?

It's pretty much where everyone above is describing. The center of the district is Magnolia and Lankershim Blvd. Obviously, the closer you are to Lankershim and the NoHo Commons, the more expensive it will be apartment-wise.

You can't miss it though, especially since yesterday they erected this massive yellow NoHo Gateway sign that has been causing a stir on blogs. Not too positive.
