Maybe on New Years. Sheesh, I've made over 100 trips out there by car, mostly on weekends, and only once was it more than 6 hours.

Take a day off from work and leave Friday morning. That's what I always do and I've never had a problem with traffic. I did make the trip on a Friday night back in February. Left at 7 PM and got there by 11:30 PM - so only 4 1/2 hours.

I've taken a few trips out there on Friday. A few years ago it took me 8 hours from Van Nuys to my hotel on the strip. The traffic getting OUT of the major cities was a pain in the butt.

I left at 6pm a few months back and made it out there by 11pm(stopped for food)

I say normally it should take 4 hours give or take where you are leaving from. I'm going in September...can't wait!

I havent been to vegas since spring 2002. Seems like an eternity ago in LA traffic.

Use to be 6-7 hours if you stop. Does anyone miss the Bun Boy in baker? Sad that it's gone. Use to stop there all the time.

If you plan to drive, leave by noon on Friday and leave LV noon on Sunday. Or fly from LAX, Long Beach, John Waye, Burbank, Ontario - depending where you live.

Although I've never personally used one, there are bus lines like GoTo Bus that drive between L.A. and Las Vegas on a regular basis. They're inexpensive, but whether they're worth the savings or not, I don't know .....

That site said $60. I can get to Vegas and back on $60 or less. So with a couple people it would be $20 each...instead of $180.

Cheaper than flying, though, and less stressful than driving yourself .....

It all comes down to what the OP prefers -- this was just another option.

Been there both weekends, leave Friday, return Sunday. Holy h*ll!

July 4th weekend I took my wife there so we could get married! We had an amazing time. However, we drove back Sunday at 4pm, and right upon leaving the city, the road became a parking lot.

An hour later, avg speed 8 mph, avg fuel econ 8 mpg, I looked at my new wife and she looked miserable. I pulled over in Primm and we had a steak dinner. She drank beer while I drank coffee. I finally arrived home at 12am and she had been sound asleep the whole ride.

The best time to go is in the middle of the night, of course. If you can leave here at 2:00 a.m. and get there by 6:00 a.m., the drive is great!

This time of year the traffic probably isn't too bad except for Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings; how many people want to go to Vegas when it's 100 - 110 degrees?! Then again, there are a lot of very good hotel deals right now. Some of the older, off strip hotels have specials of $25/night on weekdays. That's pretty amazing!

What one person said about there being no detours if there's an accident reminds me of an experience on the 5 freeway, in the middle of nowhere. A car caught on fire, and subsequently set off a grass fire near Crow's Nest Landing, I think. The freeway was down to one lane, and it was backed up for probably ten to fifteen miles. No way out!
