Let's keep the focus on LA/California, please; if you want to get into larger political issues move it to the Politics and Other Controversies forum.

If I can take a bus from Culver City to SMC that would be great. I'm pretty sure we will have a car, but I prefer to walk to school if I live close enough and use the car on the weekends.

I hear that a lot of older people rent their pool houses for a lot cheaper...is that really common?

There are hardly any pools in Santa Monica and Culver City let alone pool houses. Who told you that?

Maybe you mean guest houses? Those are hard to come by, and when you do, they tend to be pricey.

You should check out Craigslist for rentals to get an idea of prices. Check the listings for the Westside.

So i think i may have gotten a job as a nanny, but it is over craigslist and i don't know how to tell if it's real or not. this lady sent pictures of her family promised to send a check in advanced and the email doesn't sound fake, but i don't want to get my hopes up because i know there are hundreds of fakes out there. how can i tell if it's real. I don't want to be rude and risk the job by just coming out and saying, " hmm this sounds too good to be true how do i know it's real" any suggestions????

I would say it's fake. I can't imagine a person hiring someone to take care of their children without ever meeting them. It could be legit, but I wouldn't want to work for someone who is willing to hire over the internet without ever meeting the person.

I completely agree, these are the types of things on Craigslist that give them a bad name. There are so many. Why would she send you a check in advance, and is it going to be a cashieres check? Anyone can send pictures of their family, you want to see some of mine???

Please, poster be very careful and keep us informed.

Whatever you do, don't send this "lady" your SS # or any personal details that could get your identity stolen. Esp. don't send the routing number for your bank account, okay?

Most people who are of the type to hire a Nanny will do so through a service. If you have the right credentials to do so, sign up with such a service. Then you'll know it's legit.
