We'll be taking my son to college the third week in August and I would love to stay in a house for the week, rather than a hotel. California is just so huge and I have no clue which town would make sense to rent a vacation home in. The pickings are few in Claremont or we would just stay there. I have been browsing on VRBO and I'm totally confused. I really am trying to avoid ending up at the Comfort Suites...I guess any farther than 45 minutes away would be silly. TIA!

When you say 'house' do you mean a Bed and Breakfast?

If you can find something, more power to you, but I have my doubts: here are towns near Claremont that might work: Glendora, La Verne, SAn Dimas, Ontario, Rancho C. those all come to mind. Maybe others will have some ideas.

No, she means a home that owners will rent out for a short period of time, this is the latest trend, but I am not sure there would be much available in San G. valley. What she is looking for is often found, more in resort type of areas.

Have you checked Craigslist? There are often vacation homes listed, but I don't know if there would be anything in that specific area .....

yep, we're looking for a house - thought it would be more relaxed to operate from a household rather than a hotel or a B&b for the week. Plus, since we'll be visiting regularly over the coming years, it would be great to find a home base.

Nmnita, I'm afraid your instincts are right. There just aren't many vacation-y type places near there - it seems to be in a dead zone between the beach/LA & Big Bear/Palm Springs. I will certainly check and see if there are any rentals in the towns you mentioned, but I know for sure two of them - Rancho Cucamonga & Ontario - I have searched for and found nada.

Dotm, thanks - yes, I've checked craigslist - even posted a real estate wanted ad when I didn't come up with anything - so far, a week later, no responses

I am going to assume your son is going to one of the Claremont colleges. Congrats! I just graduated from one of the colleges and I am sure your son will enjoy his time there. I am not sure if there are any vacation homes around the area. Someone already mentioned cities in the Inland Empire. You might want to look at Walnut, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, and Brea if you do not mind driving 20 minutes to Claremont. Places in Orange County that are about 30 mintues away from Claremont are Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Anaheim, and Orange and I am sure they must have vacation homes since they are right next to Disneyland. You can also look into Pasadena, Arcadia and San Marino if you do not mind driving 30-40 minutes to Claremont.

You're coming during the height of the heat and smog in these areas. You probably want to go south (Orange County) or toward Big Bear. Ontario is not suitable at all for a vacation, other than to fly into. It will be 115 degrees and above in the Palm Springs area. (The Claremont area is absolutely lovely but not particularly vacation-like.)

Yes, he's going to Pomona and congrats to you as well on the graduation! And, yes he's completely over the moon about going there. Thanks for the Anaheim suggestion...hadn't thought of that, and there are definitely many vacation homes there.

Wow - thanks for the heads up on the heat. And, I have heard Claremont is really nice - I just wish someone had a vacation home there! About how long do you think it would be from Big Bear to Claremont?
