Sorry for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would like all the inconveniences that come with snow/long winters. I don't think it's "pretty" I think it's a pain in the behind. Maybe it's just me because I have a bad case of S.A.D, but even the medicine don't help me in the winter, it's extremely depressing. I hate winter, snow, ice, cold and anything remotely related to it. Being stuck indoors and looking out at a cold grey sky and slushy roads is painful.
My opinion is only MY opinion, I just have trouble "getting" why anyone would prefer long winters VS warm and sunny year round.

I grew up in southern Virginia and it was typically 100 degrees and over in the summer. Winters were never below 40 degrees and we never saw snow, just rain. I now live in PA and though I'd give my eyeteeth to move back to VA, I do love the milder climate here. Natives complain all the time about the weather, so I stick out like a sore thumb when I say I love the snow, but I do. It's so nice to bundle up in front of a roaring fire, sip hot chocolate and read a book. Perfect!

Re: Winter inconveniences - some of us like the challenge of getting through a tough winter storm, it adds to life's experience. Needing that extra time to get to work (scraping windows, etc) only helps cure laziness. Driving, walking, being out in the snow/cold only makes a person stronger, or stronger-willed. During one of the last Denver blizzards, I took a short nap outside in it once it had stopped snowing, bet you'll think that's crazy!

Snow is absolutely beautiful IMO.

Is there a rule against you being outside in it? I've worked outside in it on quite a few sub-zero nights (and days) over the past two years, and intend to next winter and successive winters after that. Again, it makes you stronger.

I love the gray sky, it shields that darn sun. I would love to live in a place where the sun never shined through the clouds and it was always cold/snowy. Some of us don't like sweating constantly nor do we like the sun beating down on us.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of "warm and sunny," either. Give me gray skies and precipitation, please.

I spent my "Wonder years" in Connecticut and remember many days when we (the neighborhood kids) would stay outside for HOURS in the snow. We sledded down hills, skated on outdoor ponds, built snow forts, etc. Overall, I don't think winters are as cold and snowy now as they used to be, so I'm sure you'd be able to adapt.

If you do move, make sure you keep your garage available for your car, as opposed to the typical So Cal thing of filling it with your crapola. You'll see what I mean once your first winter hits and your car is outside in it.

It's all about trade-offs in life. You're willing to put up with all the terrible costs and quality of life problems in LA to get away from cold weather and gray skies. Some of us don't have S.A.D and are making the opposite trade.

BTW if you're trying to get away from long, cold, cloudy winters, why move to the most expensive state in the union when there's plenty of other places with abundant heat and sun but a much more affordable cost of living?

Luckily, most cold weather places have basements to keep all the crap in.

For me, I really do love LA, having been in the area all my life... But it seems like the really hot months are even hotter and longer than before. Even when you have A/C, you end up with $600 DWP bills for running it all day! Plus with the drought you can't even let the kids run around in the sprinklers to cool off... unless you want a fine for using more than the allowed amount of water. I'm sure we'll get used to cold weather, regardless of where we end up moving.

I have seven tons of A/C in my house in Huntsville and I pay a lot less. But, power here is only around $0.09 per kW-hr.
