...then South Central is far more affluent than most white American neighborhoods

There is a lot of envy-based 'perception' and envy-based resentment over what the reality of a 'black neighborhood' in LA has become. The fact of the matter is, if you go here Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
you'll find that the per capita in come of 'black' Ladera Heights is higher than that of Rancho Palos Verdes Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
If you go here Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
you'll find that 'black' Carson's ZIP code is safer (and more populous) than Beverly Hills 90210 Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
So envious folks can call black neighborhoods 'South Central' all they like, but he blackest neighborhoods in LA are now View Park, Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills, Carson's Dominguez Hills and parts of Altadena - all of which are either more affluent than the average white area or, in regards to Carson, FAR safer.

many people paying astronomical rent on the westside would be happy to be able to afford a home like those in some of the communities mentioned above. baldwin hills, windsor hills, and view park have million-dollar+ dwellings with city views to rival hillside communities to the north, but because you have to drive through the mildest parts of "south central" to get to them, many whites in LA don't even know that those neighborhoods are there. to be more precise, i would venture to say that MOST do not.

North East SFV can be pretty bad but most of the violence is gang fighting over there. To me it really dosent matter. Any real dangerous city you go to isnt going to be that bad for a visitor unless your "looking" for trouble.
You don't sound ignorant, I don't blame you for wondering considering all the L.A gang movies or stories the media feeds out about L.A. As a tourist I wouldn't worry so much, but stay the heck away from south central unless you want to visit Compton which has the worst murder rate per capita in the entire nation. a 10 mile radias and about 70 to 80 homicides a year. Find me a 10 mile radias in the U.S thats that bad.

East Palo Alto in Northern California - Opa-Locka in Florida (Miami district) - Gary in Indiana are closely following behind Compton and are the "runners up" per say.

I'll be moving to socal in about a month and will be spending a lot of time in LA with friends. They live in an area called Mid City, is this near South Central or in it? Before coming to this board I wasn't worried at all about being in South Central, as I'm from Baltimore, MD and lived in Washington D.C. for two years, but now I'm kinda of worried. LOL Should I be or is Mid City an OK area?

some parts of mid city are not safe and others are. it depends on where. you have some nice old homes and nice old neghborhoods, it really depends where. but you will be fine for the most part. especially if you are in the pocket north of wash and west of crenshaw. about a 12 block area that is very nice, very uppity and very black. some areas south of wash are also nice. but again it depends where.

At least in Baghdad, you can carry a gun. If you want to visit for sight seeing, go to Northern Calif. Make sure you are north of Sacramento too.

I find interesting and somewhat perverted the oneupmanship engaged in here by Angelenos trying to see who can badmouth our city the most. If it's so bad, I wonder why they don't leave. Maybe they're trying to demonstrate how tough they are. ("We can deal with the crime, but you outlanders shouldn't even step foot here.") Or maybe they don't know what they're talking about.
