There are no dangerous areas in East Long Beach. East Long Beach is very nice and includes some of the most expensive, safest places in southern california.

The parts of Long Beach that people may consider unsafe are central Long Beach, parts of West Long Beach and parts of North Long Beach.

Default Dangerous areas

I spent a week in LA about 10-15 minutes drive east of LA airport. I really liked it however I was told not to look at anyone on the street and not go out at night. In all my times travelling I have not been advised this from people so I would say this area is pretty bad.

A New Zealand tourist at the place I stayed said she got her wallet snatched from her hands on the first day of being in LA. I sensed as I got the bus and train (mainly bus) that I may be a target. I don't know why. I was only one of two young white females on a jammed bus. I thought this was just me being paranoid or racist but then at a train station a man yelled out to me ''Hey white girl in the green Tshirt''. Seeing as I was clearly the only one at the station fitting this description I assume he was talking to me. It seemed like he wanted to talk to me. i completely ignored it and pretende I couldn't hear over my headphones. I'm not sure what he wanted but he was yelling it out.

I was really safe however. I dressed conservatively with no look at all saying I had nay sort of money, tshirt, shorts and cap. I kept only cash (about $20-40) in a zipped pocket in my shorts.

This area seemed bad but if you don;t make yourself look like a dumb, white tourist with no street sense you should be fine.

Santa Monica and along the beach is all fine if you apply the above.

I didn't go out at night. I was young white female and told I should not go out at night at all.

not sure on whether it is safe. It's probably safer than getting in a car or taking drugs so it's not that dangerous.

I wouldn't talk to anyone or a make eye contact. i walked around for a week during the day and had no problems.

Yeah, dont look like a white, pompus tourist and you should be okay.

How are you supposed to learn about the area if you don't meet anyone new. Most of us don't bite. You just have to be smart about your actions.

Sure in some areas that is good advice, but I would say during the day in most of LA as long as you don't make yourself a target, you are probably safer if you do talk to some people, make some friends. The guy on the train could have had good intentions, of course there is always the chance that he didn't and you played it safe. However, you just have to be confident and realize that the majority of people in LA are just trying to make a living. They mean no harm, just don't be a tourist.

I have lived all over Los Angeles for almost twenty years now, and you're fooling yourself if you think you live or can stay in an in an area where there is no crime- it's everywhere and it can come to you even if you believe you're in a safe area. Many cities in L.A. have gentrified names but in reality aren't the nicest or safest places to stay while in L.A.- check here on this forum before booking your accomodations or you may be unpleasantly surprised.

There are locals in every city in the world who make their living stealing from tourists. If you're traveling here from another country it's always a good idea to have a L.A resident or a companion who knows L.A. guide you. Most popular places to go in L.A. are safe for the most part, but use common sense and be aware of anyone looking like they're eying you for their next victim.

You were really bright not to talk to that guy. Likely pimp and no I'm not joking. Even within their bizarre culture subculture, walking away with no acknowledgement is the correct thing to do.

Is that a joke post?

To buy what? Crack? Or to buy a house on that street?

Check the crime index for West Compton - it's a 1 out of 10. And 10 is safest, 1 is most dangerous. Click the "safety" tab when the map loads below.

West Compton, CA on LA Life

Homicide12473% higher
Homicide12473% higher
Homicide - 473% higher than LA County average

Rape 20% higher

Robbery 59% higher

Aggravated assault 127% higher

The LALife Crime Index for West Compton is 37. That's about 110% higher than the LA County average. It measures violent crime reported, so lower is better.
