DITTO on the "avoid palmdale" sentiment.

im not really concerned about the "ghettodale" aspect of it all as much as the distance from LA or anything fun.

find something closer. for your budget here are the reasonable options with a lil more bakground.

Bell- 7 to 9 miles southeast of downtown. mostly hispanic. mostly single family residences. very workable public trans. still has urban LA feel to it.

Inglewood- 11 to 13 miles southwest of downtown. mostly hispanic and black. mostly single family residences. more SUBurban feel to it. might not be too accessible by bus.

North Hollywood- 13-15 miles northwest of downtown. mixed. mixed apts and houses. new art scene. can feel far from LA. but it does have atrain stop!!

Whittier- 17 to 19 miles east of downtown. mostly hispanic with plenty white folk. mostly houses. older variety. pretty suburban fell. not so accesible by public trans.

those 4 places above fit your budget, are not too far from the fun stuff, are not as dangerous as other cities or areas in LA and can be reached within an hour (depending on what time and what place and what day).

as for marinello. its one of the more established beauty schools. they been around for ages. dont know how well they train tho. im sure its no vidal sassoon.

good luck

So which of these cities would be the cheapest to live, closest to Los Angeles? Would not want to pay more than 700 a month for an apartment, don't care how small it is. I just need a place to stay, in California while I go to school, but would love to be as close to LA as possible. I would love to just live in LA and go to school and work there, but I just don't think it's affordable.
