I am interested in moving to The Ellison apartment complex in Venice Beach. I could not find many reviews about the apartment and was wondering if any one had any thoughts about this place. I know it is rumored Jim Morrison lived there while writing for The Doors.

Any advice about living in Venice would be much appreciated. I know it can be funky but I think that is why I like it. Is it safe to live on Speedway and Paloma?

Yes regarding violent crime. If you aren't homeless or involved in hard drug use than you probably wouldn't encounter any problems with violence in Venice (outside of Oakwood). However the high homeless/runaway population does cause high levels of property crime especially car break ins, even when one considers L.A. in general has problems with car break-ins and the state of the economy means property crime problems will get worse. Secured parking in Venice helps A LOT, especially considering the scarcity of street parking.

I lived in the Ellison from 1999-2003. Its a truly unique building. It started off as a hotel, and early guests included Laurel and Hardy, and Mae West. The Jim Morrison thing may or may not be true, but they did film a few scenes of the movie (The Doors) there. The apartment are small. I actually moved around the building a bit, having lived in 402, 403, 53 and 103 (which was formerly a servants quarters and was never actually rented as an apartment. I did the landscaping and other small tasks around the building and lived there for free!) Parking sucks, as in, there is none. The roof is ssupposed to be off limits but that has never stopped anyone from going up there. Many memorable moments in my life were set against that backdrop.... I doubt anyone who ever lived there forgets it.
