is being near fairfax (around canter's) not considered a desirable area? (apartments, for rent)

i am born and raised in the valley, and went to canter's and the silent movie theatre last week. i was walking around residential streets and saw a lot of cute little buildings (i hate apartment buildings that are huge and impersonal) with for rent signs. i also thought this was a nice area and different from a lot of los angeles and believed it would be a really expensive area for la standards. i was shocked to know it wasnt as expensive as i thought it would be. i saw a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom with 1 parking spot for 1650.

i am in my mid 20s, jewish (i am practicing but not very religious, i like being around jewish culture though), and i guess electic.

anyway, my father told me for people in my age range it isn't the "cool" area to be. that true? i mean i wouldnt base any possible relocation on that, in fact i might be a bit turned off to be in a very yuppie area. i am just curious as to what other angelinos think.

It is pretty close to Hollywood, WeHo, etc so I think if nothing else it would be convenient if you want eclectic while not being right in the middle of it. I personally wouldn't mind living there. I love canter's and that area is becoming more and more interesting. Maybe it is not the coolest area, but what does your father think is cool? I guess there are yuppies in that area but I don't know if they dominate the area.

If you like the area then who cares? Hang out there during the day and get to know the people, see if you like them.

no i wouldnt NOT move to an area because others tell me it is not desirable. i just wanted to know why that area wasnt considered desirable know what i am saying?

i guess the yuppie parts of ca to me would be santa monica, century city, marina del ray, warner center, studio city, calabasas, a lot of sherman oaks, and west hollywood.

my father doesnt really think of areas being uncool or cool. he just was saying most people my age that are single wouldnt gravitate towards that area hence it not being a "trendy" aera.

I personally like the area. I enjoy walking around the area due to the older houses and apartments and Canter's is a great spot to go to after drinking. The one thing that turns me off about that area is the Grove- that said you are close to some really great places including Farmer's Market and LACMA just to name a few.

i think the farmer's market is cool and it's just down the street. it might not be an area where there are tons of hip bars, but there are certainly a lot food options close by. that area is also practically right smack in the center of the city, so you would have relatively easy access to just about everywhere in LA.

yeah you 2 just named why i like it. i have been to the grove once and dont get the hype. i do love the farmer's market because it is historical. i love older areas with landmarks, not so much new and upcoming areas with bars and restaurants that we hear are cool because celebrities tell us.

yeah that theater is awesome, i've seen some really cool festivals there.
frankly, your dads trippin dude, that area is pretty cool. north of that spot, like santa monica and fairfax has more stuff at night. right now anything east of that is considered eastside l.a. to most people over there and that's where most of the stuff pops off. The sunset strip is cheesy and most of the hollywood set chills in the hills or comes down to echo park,silver lake,los feliz,downtown,etc.
That neighborhood is interesting though, check it out.

i love echo park, but the parts i really like, i could never afford. if i end up staying in la, i more than likely will go to fairfax. i would love to be walking distance to that theater, those restaurants, and to the fairfax high flea market. i am not into clubs or even "nightlife". i will do a bar once in awhile, but a place where i can show up in jeans and my non designer clothes lol.

absolutley. that's how i roll too. perhaps downtown would be more to your liking. there's a variety of lofts that i've seen lately that are dirt cheap. i moved from s.f. out here to koreatown and mostly walk or ride my bike everywhere and really have no difficulty getting around. btw, you could afford echo park...

i have looked at lofts in downtown and they are out of my price range for what i want (2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom). i did look at this place on wilshire called the gaylord (i know) and i really liked it. it was on wilshire and just had a great location. thing was they didnt have a parking garage and i personally see having to park in a garage somewhere away from where i am living as a big inconvenience (i have done that before and its annoying). i have mixed feelings about downtown.

i go to echo park from time to time and the places i like are out of my price range. if i wanted to stay in echo park but in part i didnt like, i could afford it (but wouldnt want to).
