I have been living and working in New York City for the past year and I am moving on to LA at the end of next month... My friend just moved there a couple of weeks ago for a new job and has an apartment in West Hollywood, and I will be living with her...

I am just after some advice about what areas to look at for finding a job?? Obviously I will base my search around the West Hollywood area, but was wondering if it would be feasible to look in the downtown area as well?? I do not intend to buy a car and will be relying solely on public transport and walking (apparently its not normal in LA, but I love walking - I wouldn't be fazed by a 1.5-2 mile walk to work).

Is there an easy way to get from West Hollywood to Downtown by public transit?? Are there any other areas that are easily accessible by public transport from West Hollywood??

Thanks!
Trina

west hollywood is probably 7 or 8 miles from downtown, you'll have to take a bus if you won't have a car. I believe the 704 bus goes downtown via santa monica blvd and sunset blvd. if you won't be living near santa monica blvd then you'll have to make atleast one transfer. the subway goes through hollywood proper on its way downtown, you may consider living near a red line station. there is also a line that goes through koreatown, the purple line, which is not too far from west hollywood (maybe 4 or 5 miles).

It should be a relatively easy commute to downtown by bus. Depending on where in West Hollywood you'll be living it may also be faster to take the bus (or walk) to the Hollywood/Highland Red Line Station and then take the subway from there. That's a fast commute and gets you out of traffic. In any case, downtown is certainly feasible. (and don't worry -- there's lots of other transit users and walkers in LA, too, despite the stereotypes to the contrary!)

Thanks for the info! will extend my search to downtown and keep my fingers crossed for finding a job when everyone is saying it is near impossible!

As for where in West Hollywood I'll be, its somewhere close by Melrose/ N La Cienega Blvd...

Kiwi66, Not that it is near impossible to find a job, just depends what it is you do. Bankable skills are always desired anywhere you look. For example I am in healthcare and we have jobs that go unfilled. many just don't want to endure the education to fill the positions. We also have plenty of jobs that are over filled, meaning that people get sent home or are given excused absenses.
