My idea of Cali is simple.. the atmosphere is laid-back, and people are chill. I plan to live in SoCal one day soon. My advantage? My grampa lives in Sacramento, and I'm visiting him next summer (2011). I'll be able to "test the water before jumping in". I'll be CaliBound before I know it! Any ideas on the job market?Hopefully, I'll have better luck than some of yall! It's so depressing reading these posts. Cheer up yall! Live life, and live it to the fullest! It's about taking chances and enjoying what you love. Don't look back on the past, look towards your future and MAKE it bright! My best wishes to everyone who is struggling. Find the fight in you!

You realize that Sacramento is almost 400 miles away from anything that can be considered remotely SoCal, right? There's nothing in the feel of Sacramento that would even remotely remind anyone of SoCal.

You realize that most people in SoCal have to actually go to jobs and feed their families. Even better is that a huge chunk of SoCal are immigrants, most of whom work all the time just to scratch a living.

Its probably no different in any place; paying bills is paying bills. Its not fun to watch your bank balance go from to . Just like any other place imaginable, its only as chill as you want it to be.

Not just Southern CA, but everywhere there are those who tend to over spend and live beyond their means. You could live here in Indiana for very cheap, but then your in Indiana...indoors as we prepare for another foot of snow.
If you want to have kids and do the family thing, own a home, then I would have to agree it would be wise to exit California if your not making big money. However, I still believe if your single and live very simple and learn how to use coupons (as I do) that one can make it and have a somewhat comfortable life.
Comfort, though, is by definition different to each person.

I see so many posts where people on here list cable and a BMW car payment as a bill...Well there's your problem. Drop the cable and enjoy biking or hiking. Drop the beamer and buy a 10 year old car with cash. It's all how you as an individual need to live.

I got a nice gov't job as a statistician and will be heading down to SoCal immediately after I graduate in May. I'm so ready for this! Love LA - great place to be a single dude in his 20's.

You're right, if any sector can enjoy LA it's a single guy (or DINK) who rents. Live near your job - hopefully it is in a place you want to live.

Where is your job?

OK Mr. Stats, how many people, randomly chosen, would you need to have a probability of 0.5 (a 50% chance) that any two had the same birthday (date not year)?

With the taxes going up and fees are going up, California is in a great depression economicly, it is becoming survival here jobs are leaving, it is going to be miserable to live here unless you have a ton of money.

It seems to be getting harder and harder for people to survive in S. CA. Our sales tax used to be at 8.25% for years and now its at 10%. But I'm grateful I have a place to stay at night and I get to eat good food every day thanks to my parents. Of course, the expense of living here forces many to stay with their parents. Like one of the posters above me said, we each have to live our lives to the fullest

A lot of people use phrases along the lines of having "tons of money." I know this is subjective and means different things to different people. But, for the sake of being more specific, what's the range on how much you have to earn to be making "tons of money" in LA if say, you're 30-years-old, no kids, willing to rent?

$30/hr? $40/hr? $70,000/year? $90,000/year?
