My son will be 19, summer of 2010 when graduating h.s. He plans to move to LA/Holly. area. He will have been in 9 musicals with 6 lead roles by then. He has vocal, acting, improv., rap, voiceover, impersonation talents. He finished a program at John Robert Powers this year. He also has ADHD, so he is looking towards a more DOING acting program, like Acting Corps in North Hollywood. Second school possibility was the New York Film Academy NY or LA, but you can't audition and it is more academic. Even though he is keeping all prospect options open, he is looking more to film/tv industry. Can you give me insights into the issues you know of, furnished apartments near there, etc. Thanks very much. MOM

Mom, you sound like a proud mom, good for you> I assume you will be financing this adventure for him as it will be very expensive and jobs are extremely hard to find. Do you have a rental budget in mind and will he will willing to share an apartment? All these things are worth researching. I can't give you too much help, I can tell you he will need an agent to even get started, and make sure he is ready for some rejection before he gets his big break.Nita

Expect rent to be about double what people in Iowa pay.

I'd say more than that maybe. I paid $450 for my last apartment in the midwest in the early 2000s. Pay almost $1,300 now.

We have school money saved up to fund about 9-12 months of " living there and giving it a go". Probably looking to have a least 1 roommate and would be nice to be in an apartment complex where other film/music people are living in the 19-40 year age group. He won't be taking a car and will need to rely on MTA, etc.

We figure that he may need to move into furnished, monthly apartment for 1-2 months and then find cheaper semi or furnished. Probably $500-900 per person rent per month. Knowing that it will probably be at least 700+.

Does anyone have any experience with the Acting Corps 5508 Cahuenga Blvd. No. Hollywood. or with Oakwood Taluca Hills?

getting to interviews etc without a car isn't going to be the easiest thing, the MTA as you call it isn't like the east coast or even some places in the midwest. It does exist, but it isn't everywhere nor do the trains (whatver) run often. Is it possible for him to bring a car?

Nita

ps you know what? I think you may want to visit the area, you will have a much better feel for what is involved. You may even want to talk to an agent or a few struggling film and TV hopefuls. It can help with your decisions and helf him to know what to expect.

Maybe someone here can help with info: Theatrx - Escondido, California (CA) | Company Profile

I've known the theater owner nearly all my life. His theater is in Escondido, but he's an Angeleno. He's very friendly - Steve Storc, my friend. He's on facebook, too.

Good luck!

Oakwood Toluca Hills is in a great location but is up on a hill, may not be best suited for someone without transportation.

Thanks Sarahkate_m for the info. Looks like a great theatre and guy when I looked it up.
Chris is probably looking more into film acting, but will keep theatre options open. We are looking at Acting Corps, North Hollywood or first year of New York Film Academy. If anyone has info regarding the two, we would appreciate it. Or any housing near them. Thanks.
