Default Moving to Hollywood area...questions, questions...

In a perfect world:finding a job first then moving to that area. Just graduated film school in May and no job offers yet. Looks like we'll have to blindly move down and see what happens. I know the studios are spread out, but centrally located speaking, which is the best and safest area to move to that's sorta close to the major studios? I know you all hate these types of questions, but it's what a lot of us has to do. Any info at all will help. We don't have a car yet, so near public transportation will be nice.

Hollywood itself is extremely convenient from a public transportation standpoint, is conveniently located, and is a fun neighborhood. We lived there for a couple of years and loved it. It's gritty in parts, but the central part is pretty safe, has lots of apartments (some affordable, some not), and again, is perfect for the non-driver. Be warned, though, that street parking is tough, so if you think you'll be getting a car (which is not a necessity for many people, but probably will be so in your field) then consider parking availability when you look at places. Our building allowed one car for each apartment, and it did cost extra. There was also a lot a block away that sold monthly parking passes.

check out the area near runyon canyon... (north of sunset/hollywood/franklin, just west of la brea) there are a ton of affordable apartment buildings in a safe but convenient area that is centrally located.

We have had the “Perfect Storm” now we may have the “Perfect World”, the ultimate disaster movie.
And to me it sounds as if you are just about to write the script!!

Ok, so I think we pretty much have settled on Burbank. The area seems nice enough, but reviews on a lot of the apartments were horrible. Which area is nice, safe and preferably quiet? I'm looking at places 'above' Glenoaks. Is that area nice? Someone said to check the foothills or near the studios. So much to think about. Google street views helps a lot...any suggestions?

Above Glenoaks is nice. It's a bit farther from the studios but with a car it's definitely close enough..

I'm pretty sure apartments near the studio will be a rip-off. My cousin lived on the outskirts of Toluca Lake and paid >$1000 for a small studio.

the only problem with burbank is that if you get work with fox or sony, you'll have to commute to the westside, which will be a chore to say the least. a more central location for all of the studios would be somewhere like the miracle mile or carthay areas.

I agree. Driving out of Burbank everyday get frustrating, especially if you're looking at places above Glenoaks close to the foothills. I live in Burbank and I swear the city has some of the worst traffic light coordination in the LA area.
