That latest one (post #39 by jazzmaster221) is actually pretty true to form. I've seen L.A. exactly like that. The clear days in winter with the snow on the peaks is absolutely stunning! When it's clear, the mountains loom and you get the sense that you can see the tiniest detail in them.

Excellent the way you caught the rain shower falling at the edge of downtown. In addition to the mountains ...

Also, looks like you can just see the highest point of the Verdugo Mtns, just peaking up behind the Hollywood Hills / Santa Monica Mountains.
So, that makes it a 3 mountain range shot.

Exactly the scenario but taken with what I would guess to be a 500mm or 600mm telephoto lens.
If you look on the Nikon site in the pdf`s on Lenses you will find a very nice visual example of the effect of different focal lengths.
The picture has a surf board with the waves behind but I cant be bothered to post a link but it will explain all.(For non photographers)
OK its on the brochures page pdf called NIKKOR LENSES_EN.1pdf page 34 of 36.

First photo has to be real. The snowcaps atop the San Gabriel Mountains are visible even as far down as south Orange County around the Mission Viejo/San Juan Capistrano area.

That cool picture is NOT a phony. I have it up at my desk.
From certain parts of the west side, you can see the San Gabriel mountains as a downton backdrop. The photog clearly took it on a great day. What it tells you is that LA is in a basin, ringed my mountains. The smoke and fog gathers against the mountains, pushed in from the ocean.
