Question Specific locations of Hawthorne or Torrance safe enough?

Hi there, I'm going to be a new resident of the LA area in just under a month, got a new job, so I'm excited. But my job doesn't pay very much and I'm only going to be able to afford something around or less than 800 a month that allows a small dog. I'll be working in Santa Monica for about 3 months then the company moves to El Segundo.

I've been doing some searches and hear that Gardena, Hawthorne, and Torrance tend to be ghetto (thus the cheaper rent), but they have some decent spots. The better west, the safer.

So i've been seeing several places that sound decent and curious if anyone can give me a good idea if I should even consider them.

In Hawthorne, just east of the 405, East of Hawthorne Blvd, and north of El Segundo Blvd.

In Torrence, right next to the 405 off Artesia, across from McMaster Park.

It's really hard for me to scope out these areas since I currently live in San Francisco. I'll only have about 3 days (fri, sat, sun) in mid October to look for an apartment, and don't want to waste it looking at dangerous places.

I'm mostly afraid of random gun fire and burglary. I'm mixed race (asian/white) and look either one or the other or some people think mexican. I mention my race only because I hear they sometimes target specific races.

Not looking for anything huge, so small studios don't matter so long as they got a fridge, stove, and some laundry facility nearby (if anyone would like to make suggestions of community complexes).

Thanks for anyone that can help me.
