Let's give it its full appellation: Dr. Hoggly Woggly's Tyler Texas Barbeque, on Sepulveda iin Panorama City for curious carnivores. This popular place is an excellent reminder of what the "old Valley" lifetstyle used to be - friendly, old-fashioned, modest income, and delicious food that comes in all styles, not just Mexican. Waitresses routinely joke with customers, like the one that brought our 2 foot stack of ribs and chicken, saying, "Here's your sushi, ya'all! (I actually love sushi, but also love a good joke.) Doggie bags are de rigeuer and encouraged.

Ditto on Tito's Tacos. Damn, those are some good (but veeeery greasy) tacos).
And Oki Dog, too.

If you're in the mood for Thai, try Wat Thai temple on Coldwater Canyon. It's a real, working Thai temple, but they've got fantastic, ridiculously, cheap food in a really beautiful, outddor setting. Give it a look-see.

While you're talking about that area, don't forget "The Bear Pit" on Sepulveda at the 118 freeway. It's not really a "hole in the wall" type of place, but it is modest, and the food's been excellent every time I've eaten there. Prices are fair for the sizes of the portions.

Glen,

Check out L.A. Weekly online. Read the food reviews by Jonathan Gold.

Have been gone from SoCal many years now, but was there a place called Barney's Beanery? In LA, near Hollywood, may have even been IN Hollywood.... I think Barney's Beanery was the name - wildly popular when I lived there; I was only there once, though.....
I still crave In n Out TERRIBLY.... not that In-n-Out is or was a hole in the wall, but I always think of it when I think of So Cal and So Cal food.....

SoCal is famous for In-n-Out hamburgers. they are the best. What makes it great is the simplicity. The menu looks something like this: hamburger, cheeseburger, double hamburger, double cheesburer, french fries, milk shakes (choc, straw, vanilla.)
