Some of the 'hidden treasures' of TO for you Glen.. Not hole in the wall places, but good places that are not chains. These are places that you kind of just happen upon...
Los Dos Amigos (I think thats what its called). On TO Blvd East of Rancho Road. Its under the navy recruiters office, in a bldg next to Roxys. From the street it looks like nothing, but the food is delicious, service is good & the prices are fair!
Aunt Leftys in Westlake. GREAT sub sandwiches! They have pasta there too. Its not really a sit and eat restaurant - grab something to go. The garlic bread is really good, too. Its located on Lakeview Canyon in the shopping center by Agoura Road.
Brazilian Food, Galleto Grill - this is our favorite 'special dinner' place. They have the most interesting food & it is yummy! Kind of a mix of italian & mexican food. Every single thing I have ever had there has been wonderful. Its not cheap, and its definitely not a hole in the wall place, but its not advertised & you could drive by it all the time & never notice it. Try it for a special occasion. Its on Westlake Blvd near Jacks Deli & Longs Drug (by Townsgate).
Eggs N Things is a great place for breakfast. Its only open through noon or something, and there is usually a wait, but its good food. Located on Moorpark Road in the shopping center south of Janss Road. Across from Joanns.
Side St Cafe in Newbury Park. Its a small cafe, good service & good food. It gets REALLY crowded during lunchtime because its in an industrial area. On Lawrence Drive.
Stellas. Great sandwiches, kind of healthier fare. I dont know if it actually is any healthier but it kind of feels like it is. This place has been there for years. Its in Newbury Park, on Michael Drive, across from Alamo (which I also like - has a nice, inexpensive lunch buffet).
There are 2 sushi places we like to go to, both in NP. Sushi Oaks (in the Vons/Longs shopping center, next to Lamppost Pizza). TINY place, but good sushi. Also there is another one in the Kohls shopping center, across from Quiznos. Very fresh & tasty sushi.
That should be enough to get you started.. Now I'm hungry!

What about Philippes?
Does Philippes downtown on Alameda qualify as a "hole in the wall"? Always liked that place.

There's a Barney's Beanery at the Promenade in Santa Monica. Some nice looking wait staff there.

So glad someone else knew what I was talking about and that it is still there! Any other rib joints worth a mention, feel free people.
