Good "hole in the wall" restaurants (Long Beach, Riverside: house, art)

I'll mention two good Korean eateries on Pico Boulevard in the same parking lot (right across from Santa Monica College). Affordable good eating. When I was a student at SMC, I'd eat at these places all the time. The spot where BBQ Garden is was formerly a Japanese eatery called The Katsu House (was also very good food).

C'mon people, we love Los Angeleezy because of the FOOD!!!! We have such diversity that no other place in the world can match--- I challenge anyone to match LA in the diversified food category award, you can't!!! hehe


I can name thousands of different food places and still wouldn't be able to finish my list because they are many hole in the walls that we don't know about in Los Angeles.


I seriously can't name my restaurants because I don't remember their names (only by location), I'm funny that way. I do recommend some chain restaurants though, that are rather tasty and good. I consider them hole in the walls though because they are family owned and operated.

- King Taco (scattered throughout LA, one in Pasadena)
- Alertos / Albertos or 'Albert Tacos' (if you're ever around in OC)
- Best Fish tacos are in East LA- look for them!
- Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles (the original one in LA, Pasadena Roscoe's sucks)
- Chosun Galbi (Koreatown in LA) good Korean food and BBQ
- Porto's Bakeries!! Simply the best cheese rolls evar!

I doubt these would be considered Central L.A. by many standards, but there are a couple places I'd recommend close to downtown.

Fisherman's Outlet on Central at Ceres (Just north of 6th St.)
Uncle John's Ham and Eggs at 8th and Olive (I don't know if it's still around, it used to be very good, and popular)
Howard's on Alvarado at 11th, if I recall correctly (I don't know if this one's still around, either. I haven't been down that way in quite some time).
The Pantry on Figueroa at 9th (I think this one was mentioned earlier).
The Original Tommy's on Beverly and Rampart (as well as numerous other locations around the L.A. area)

If I think about it long enough, I'll probably come up with a few more, but these are the only ones that immediately came to mind.

Are you sure that Oki Dog still exists? I think it closed; all I remember there now off the top of my head is a weird little Burger King.

There is an Oki Dog on Pic, two blocks or so west of La Brea. Just down from Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, in itself a weird place. At Oki Dog, get the pastrami burrito. Am amazing concoction.

Korean food? All sorts of little place in Koreatown... I used to like a place called Chung Jing Dong, in a strip mall at Wilton and Wilshire. Good bulgoki, great noodle soup.

At Western and Wilton (can you tell I lived in that neighborhood for a while?!), you'll find Pollo alla Brasa - Peruvian chicken. Great stuff, charred and succulent.

Best burgers? Best Burger L.A., the last one left is on Pico, about five blocks west of Fairfax.

Malibu Fish & Seafood at Coral "Gidget's" Beach (not far from "Jim Rockford's" 76 gas station). It's noisy from the traffic on PCH, but good fish sandwiches & potatoes.

haha.. after that editorial in the LA Times a couple months ago, I don't think Pink's can be considered a hole in the wall anymore
