It all depends on what they want. There are many families who are happy with that, as they decide that sharing a room is worth it for the safe, nice city/neighborhood in a convenient location and the good schools. If they're willing to go with a 2BR and possibly go without things like a dishwasher (we didn't have a dishwasher, although did have in-house washer/drier) then they'll have some good options. They're not going to be able to get everything (huge house, convenient location, nice neighborhood, good schools) for $2,000/month, so they'll have to pick and choose what's most important. Me, personally, I'd go with a little less space to get everything else. Their choice may be different.
Just a sample of what's out there: this 2BR cottage for $1750 (in a great location) also has a converted garage (not all that unusual) for office space:

I have found several places (my only other research has been greatschools and craigslist) in Pasadena (not sure if its considered south or not) that are in our range for older houses that look small but will trade square footage for school quality anytime. I think we need to take a Sunday drive up to the area dn spend the day looking around.........
Any other ideas?
Point me in another direction if need be, I would hate to drive out there and waste a day in a great area with terrible schools (unless private school suddendly became affordable LOL)
Any input on which way traffic flow (or not?) at peak times?
Hoping if the opportunity in the area for me goes as planned that we will be buying a home soon and want to "plant roots" in the area now-even if in a apartment or back house I want to stop switching areas for my families sake
and a huge thanks for all the help so far......to everyone who private messaged links a !!

Just to clarify, South Pasadena is its own separate city; it's south of Pasadena, as the name suggests, but it's not part of the city of Pasadena. Often (but not always) the ads will clearly state if the location is in South Pasadena, so if you don't want PUSD (Pasadena Unified School District) schools you should make sure to clarify exact location before signing the lease.
Even if these specific houses don't work out I don't think you're wasting your time looking around. You can easily see all of South Pasadena in a short time (it's not that big), as well as check out some of the other surrounding cities or neighborhoods.
You might want to check out Burbank, too; close to Glendale, lot of families, and while I have no experience I hear their schools are decent. I have friends who live there with kids (not in school yet, though) and love it. They were able to find an affordable house to rent.
Good luck with the move!

Most teens would think it extremely geeky and uncool to share a room. Sure, you get the odd mature before their years bohemian upstart, but broad brush? I go with my gut instinct.

Well, they may not like it, but when it comes down to it they might not have a choice. Parents have to decide between size, schools, commute, safety, etc., and find the right balance that fits in with the budget. Kids are expensive, families are expensive. It's one of the reasons so many people move out of state.

Did some searching and narrowed it down to Glendale, Montrose/La Crescenta or Burbank...really like the Glendale area near the community college.
Anybody have any secrets, tips, or spots to avoid? Going back up Sunday to see a few places, and dont want to fall in love with a perfect condo in that one bad spot
Thanks in advance!

I'm late here but I was going to suggest Montrose too.
The only advice I would offer is try to stay north of Colorado Blvd. I live in Glendale now and I really like it!

Check out the Glendale USD web site. I would think that Rosemont Middle School and Crescenta High School north of the 210 are better. You can put in an address and see what schools your kids would go to.

Any traffic tips? Any input on the 2 south at 6:30am and north at 6:30pm? (yes i work a long day...)
It looks like about 8-10 miles, but I have seen freeways where that can mean an hour...
