Radio in LA in the 1980s
LA in the 80s had the BEST radio on the PLANET - you had not one, not two, but THREE completely original groundbreaking radio formats that were famous pretty much all over the world:
1) KROQ. The original alternative rock station when that actually meant something.
2) KNAC. All metal and hard rock. All attitude. All the time. Not the best signal if you didn't live in the Long Beach vicinity, definitely a great station. What would LA in the 80s have been without an awesome metal station?
3) KDAY-AM The very FIRST all-hip-hop radio station in the WORLD - many YEARS before any else dared go all hip-hop. Mind you, this was before hip-hop turned to total **** forever in the late 90s. Hip-hop today has not the slightest resemblence to hip-hop in the 80s. Orders of magnitude more fun and exciting.
This was EXCITING radio. It was the BEST. Nowhere in the world could radio like this be found but Los Angeles in the 1980s.

Orville & Wilburs in Manhattan Beach
Coconuts in Hollywood
The Velvet Turtle? (I remember the one in Redondo best)
Billy Jeans and the Bombay Bicycle Club in Burbank
I went to a lot of goofy parties in the '80s -- on people's rooftops, up in Hollywood Hills, in all sorts of weird places. One party had valet parking on the street in Ladera Heights.
Coke in the bathroom? Remember that?
Super-tiny Koreatown? It was like 4 blocks along Vermont!

And the one in Pasadena. Living in Pasadena in the early to mid-1980's when there were about three decent restaurants in the whole city....nothing like it is now.

Question from a foreigner:
What kind of place was the Hong Kong Café and where was it located?
I only know of the name because Black Flag used to play there.

The 2001 Club on Reseda Blvd near Sherman Way back in 1983; despite it being full of cigarette smoke, I havd a lot of good times. Hell; my memories of the SFV, which is part of the City of Los Angeles were mostly good
KNX-FM, Rocking LA The Mellow Way.

Old Punk Flyers and Stuff
I have a bunch of old punk rock flyers in my storage area. I think I'll take them to work and scan them and post them this week. That should stir up a bunch of memories.

Very impressive collection Charles. Also impressed that they weren't deleted! Freedom of speech lives!
