Default Looking for a Rural Area to live near Edwards AFB

Greetings, I just found out today that my husband is being stationed at the Edwards AFB this June. I had a search around these forums and I couldn't find this specific question asked, so I am hoping you all can give me some guidance. We are looking to buy a house. We do not have kids, so school quality is not an issue for us. We do not really care about being near a good night life/entertainment area either. What we are looking for is a house with a bit of land, doesn't have to be a lot, we just don't want to feel cramped. We have dogs and while they are mostly indoors we would like a big fenced yard for them. I would like to have a big garden too. We love camping and doing things outdoors, and I especially love swimming, so being close to a lake or a good place to hike would definitely be a plus but not necessary. Can anyone recommend an area like that that is around an hour or less drive to Edwards? I've never been to California, and we are only going to have two weeks out there to find and buy a house before we move, so any information would be appreciated. Many thanks

Everything around Edwards is rural, it's desert rural but very few people live up in that part of the world. Nearest town is Rosamond and you could look on the west side of that town to find homes on large lots out in the desert. Rosamond even has one of those skypark developments with homes and hangars built around a private air strip. If you want a more mountain area try Tehachapi to the northwest. Going the other way you could look around the nicer parts of Palmdale/Lancaster like Quartz Hill or Little Rock. And further south is Acton and Agua Dulce.

You might want to look along the base of the San Gabriel mountains. Somewhere in Llano like Crystalaire maybe. From there you are talking 35-40 minutes to EAFB.

It sounds like Tehachapi might be perfect for you. Bear Valley Springs has a lake or two.
