And the unincorporated area surrounded by Compton called "East Compton" on the maps is probably not one of the better areas.
Paramount isn't really a "nice bedroom community", but it's decent. Honestly, along Rosecrans or Alondra, it really doesn't get nice until you get to Cerritos or La Mirada.

by my unofficial count, there have been a couple dozen of these silly threads about compton over the past few years. and the only reason for the disproportionate amount of interest in the city is the enduring image of gangsta rappers repping their hometown and hyping it up as this rough, dangerous war zone, which of course is going to pique the interest of bland suburban kids around the nation.

i mean, why isn't there as much interest in other communities in the LA area that have endured tough times such as lynwood? or el monte? or pomona? or pacoima? or panorama city?
Good points, how about east L.A period? But I do think Compton is pretty bad..

We were on Rosecrans, so I think it was probably Paramount that seemed like such nice middle-class community.

It's not that bad, but the surrounding areas leave much to be desired, so you kind of get that bleedover from them. It doesn't help that the Paramount School District is subpar. Usually the cities reflect the quality of the school district in general around here.

you might be thinking of lynwood. those two are next to eachother.

maywood, sometimes referred to as maywatts, is neighbor to huntington park and vernon (industrial area).

they really arent that bad, unless you compare them to downey or glendale.

I've read that Maywood is bad but I don't really know where Maywood stops and Compton begins. I think they are side by side.

The unicorporated area of Athens has to be one of the worst places in LA.
