I drove thru Compton a few weeks ago and it has gotten much better. A few decades ago it was very nice. I think rising home values forced many people out that dragged it down. Personally I would give Compton a chance over Lake Elsinore or Manteca.

Inglewood isn't anywhere near as bad, it's a suburb that went from all white to black to hispanic and black. It's on its way back up and has nice real estate and beautiful neighborhoods. However, there are some parts that are pretty bad. It did win an All-America City award this year. Ignorance is bliss..

Inglewood isn't that bad. We drive through it (and stop) all the time. Some parts of it are really nice and some of the neighborhoods rival good neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley. If you were looking to move to Inglewood and had time to scope out all the good neighborhoods, you'd find places that are decent to live in.
I've read that Maywood is bad but I don't really know where Maywood stops and Compton begins. I think they are side by side.

It may gotten better, I haven't been near there is years, but NO< a couple of decades ago it wasn't nice, much less very nice. It wasn't even nice in the 50s. That is when it started to go down hill. Actually it may have been at its worse a couple of decades ago.
I have heard the city has improved.
To the OP; is there a city worse? That depends on how far away from Los Angeles you are wondering about. Inglewood was a dream town until the 70s, then look what happened...

The city that abuts Compton on the East Side appears to be fairly nice.
It's weird how you drive through Compton with all the bars on the windows, etc. and you end up in this perfectly okay bedroom type community with no bars on the windows, Starbucks, etc. I don't know what town it is but it is right next to Compton on the East Side.

compton receives far more attention on these boards than it should simply because of the notoriety it attracted during the gangsta rap era of the late '80s/early '90s. in most people's minds, the city became synonymous with crime and urban decay when in fact it was hardly the only community in the LA area that was struggling at the time and far from the worst out there when you consider places like gary, indiana; east st. louis, il; camden, nj; brownsville/east new york, brooklyn; and so on and so forth.
by my unofficial count, there have been a couple dozen of these silly threads about compton over the past few years. and the only reason for the disproportionate amount of interest in the city is the enduring image of gangsta rappers repping their hometown and hyping it up as this rough, dangerous war zone, which of course is going to pique the interest of bland suburban kids around the nation.
i mean, why isn't there as much interest in other communities in the LA area that have endured tough times such as lynwood? or el monte? or pomona? or pacoima? or panorama city?

Hi, I believe Lake Elsinore is right up there if not worse than Compton, at lease you know Compton is bad and dangerous. When I recently moved to Alberhill Ranch in Lake Elsinore, my neighbors informed me after moving in about all the Break-Ins, drug abuse and much more, which I wasn't aware of. The reason is the City of Lake Elsinore has a possibly of not notifying the public of all the crimes in the City. Compton on the other hand lets you know right up front to be careful. I also believe Richmond, CA is right up there with both in my book - Lake Elsinore is the worse of the 3 cities. At night in Lake Elsinore you have to call the Sheriff's Department and my neighbors say it can take up to 2 hours for the Sheriff's to get to your house in Lake Elsinore.

That town would be Paramount, most likely. Lynwood is also on Compton's north and northeast sides.
And the unincorporated area surrounded by Compton called "East Compton" on the maps is probably not one of the better areas.

Boy, you said it. I was wondering why the real estate in Gary Indiana was so cheap a couple of years ago. I started investigating and found that a lot of it was really bad -- burned out, bombed out houses, porches falling down, boarded windows, etc. Compton isn't that bad from what I've seen.
