Cypress is alright. It's on Orange County, not LA.

Cypress is a very safe community, has a good community college, has some shopping(Mervyn's was the only true department store, and they're out of business), is close to Westminster, Cerritos, and Buena Park Malls, close to Knott's Berry Farm, the schools are excellent(Oxford is one of the best public high schools in the nation, easily in the top 5 on most charts), and is an easy commute to Long Beach. The "worst" areas of Cypress will be along Lincoln, since that is the most busy thoroughfare.

Did Kohl's take over your Mervyns? They've been renovating the old Mervyn's in HB for a few months and should be opening soon.

Orange County, but only just. It's pretty non-descript. Fairly safe. Unless you're a gang member cruising a radius for gangland activity you won't be troubled by it. Shopping is suburban and typical. The Cypress Swap Meet is a popular one, though, if you like flea markets. Cypress itself I think is...in the Los Alamitos School District? That's a good district. In fact, if not Cypress then check out Los Alamitos or Rossmoor, which are just that much closer to Long Beach and are cleaner suburbia, though I think by the same token Cypress is cheaper, if that's a big factor.
You've probably been made wary of Hawaiian Gardens and Stanton, which border the city on either side. But they're two compact areas where activity is pretty much confined, and both have improved a bit too anyway. You're OK in Cypress. Cypress is OK, just not .

If that's the case then check out Seal Beach, which is the only really family friendly beach community around and you'll still have the benefit of the Los Alamitos School District. Or you can move to the OC edge of Long Beach where the schools and atmosphere are excellent. Double benefits for your kids if they're into swimming, water polo or volleyball. There are LB residents here that can offer their perspectives. Do Belmont Shore residents go to Los Al HS? Or would they go to Millikan or Wilson?

belmont shore residents (and all LB residents) can go to any high school in LB. There are also interdistrict transfers between LB and Los Al.
