Looking to move to LA (Van Nuys possibly) from Toronto, Canada
Hello, I am looking to move to Van Nuys or LA from Toronto and I have no family and no friends there! (Scary)
Can anyone tell me how to go about...
finding a place (how much is it to purchase a small place?)
meeting nice people
Has anyone made a move recently (especially any Canadians out there) who can tell me about their experience?
Thanks so much

I'm Canadian, came here from Ontario about 7 weeks ago, didn't know a soul here. I rented a place over the internet before arriving and am happy with it, even though they say to never do that (I rented in a large rental community, so it was relatively un-risky to do so, and the benefits of having an apartment waiting for me outweighed the risks). I wouldn't buy right now in L.A. as I don't think the market has bottomed out here, but if I stay here several years then I may.
I find people here very friendly, there are lots of semi-organized activities around through things like Meetup.com and other activity groups.
Check the MLS to see what prices are like- they're more than Toronto for nice areas! Rents are higher too. Lots of other stuff is cheaper though, so it offsets it a bit.

Why Van Nuys?
Studio $850+
1br 900-950+
House$1500+
2br condo $180k+
3br/2ba house $280+
note many of these are located in not so good area. For purchase in the nicer areas, add 100-200k to the price.

No one moves to Van Nuys on purpose... You might want to do a bit more research before moving to So Cal, I believe you could do a lot better.

What you'll find a lot of out here is that the jobs are in places you don't to (or can't afford to) live. That's why the freeways are so congested. The good news is that you don't have to go that far from Van Nuys to find a better place to live.

Hello
Hi, Thanks for the reply. What province are you originally from and why did you decide to move to SoCal? Thanks for the info...I was checking out VN and it's definitely not the kind of area I'd want to be in from the looks of it and from what people are telling me!
How did you find the move? Have you had a chance to meet alot of people?
Thanks
